Most petite outfits for women in their 70s fail for one boring reason: the clothes were cut for someone several inches taller. Hems pool, jackets run long, and the outfit ends up wearing you.
So I built these 14 looks differently. Each one rests on a single proportion trick, and I name it plainly so you can reuse it with clothes you already own.
I’ve also been honest about sizing: I say which pieces come in true petite and which are regular cuts I picked because they run short.
If you’re still working out how to dress petite in your 70s, start with the first three, which are the easiest. They sit comfortably alongside my broader guide to dressing well in your 70s.
1. Ginger Cashmere V-Neck + Pecan Ponte Trousers + Cognac Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Elsie Cashmere V Neck Sweater (Warm Ginger)
$170.00 | There’s no petite version, so go for the XS or S: the front measures 21.9 to 22.2 inches, which sits around the hip bone on a short torso.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants, Petite 26″ Inseam (Roasted Pecan)
$39.90 | True petite, with a 26-inch inseam that stops at the ankle and saves you a trip to the tailor.
Italian Suede Penny Loafer (Cognac)
$84.00 | Italian suede with a plain penny strap and no hardware, in a warm rust-tan that carries the brown story to the toe.
This is the column trick, done in warm browns: a ginger V-neck, pecan trousers and cognac suede loafers. The three shades are close, not matched, and that is fine.
With no hard line across the body, the eye reads one unbroken length from shoulder to shoe.
Be clear-eyed about sizing here. The trousers are a true petite cut with a 26-inch inseam, while the sweater is a regular cut, so take the XS or S, which run about 22 inches down the front.
The mistake is finishing with a pale, contrasting shoe. It breaks the column right where you need it most.
2. Pinstripe Poplin Shirt + Dark Straight Jeans + Navy Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Petite Jules Classic-Fit Button-Up Shirt in Striped Greenwich Poplin (White Blue)
$98.00 | A genuine petite cut, and this link opens the petite range, so shoulders and sleeves are scaled down along with the body.
Bella Stretch Straight Jeans, 26″ Inseam (Deep Rinse)
$50.00 | Not labeled petite, but this is the 26-inch inseam listing, which is the ankle length you want. The photo shows a longer leg on a taller model.
Tifani Leather Tassle Loafer (Navy Suede)
$150.00 | Navy suede with tonal tassels and no metal, so the foot disappears into the dark denim above it.
Kaia Crossbody (Cognac)
$104.00 | Small enough to stay in proportion on a short frame, and the crossbody strap adjusts, so shorten it to your hip.
A crisp shirt in a fine pinstripe, dark straight jeans, navy suede loafers and a small tan bag: my Saturday market uniform.
The trick is the stripe, because narrow lines running top to bottom pull the eye up and down the torso.
The shirt is a true petite cut, so the shoulder seams sit where yours do. The jeans aren’t labeled petite, but their 26-inch inseam lands at the ankle.
Where this goes wrong is stripe width. On a small frame a wide stripe stops reading as a line and turns into blocks.
3. Sky Blue Cashmere V-Neck + Navy Pull-On Trousers + Navy Sneakers

Shop the Look
Cashmere V-Neck Sweater (62 Blue)
$99.90 | Uniqlo doesn’t cut this in petite, yet the size run starts at XXS, which gets you a shorter body in pure cashmere.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants, Petite 26″ Inseam (Navy)
$39.90 | Same true petite pant as look 1, in a navy so dark it nearly reads black.
Leather Side Detail Trainer (Navy)
$170.00 | Mostly navy leather and suede on a tan gum sole, with a slim profile that adds no bulk at the ankle.
Travel days call for soft things that still have a shape. Here that’s a sky blue cashmere V-neck with a small front tuck, dark navy pull-on trousers and navy sneakers.
Two things do the work: the waistband sits at your natural waist, so your legs start higher, and whatever bag you carry stays small and sits at the hip.
The trousers are true petite. The sweater isn’t, but its sizes start at XXS.
A big tote is the usual mistake, and on a short frame it swallows everything you just got right.
4. Navy Spot Blouse + Taupe Ponte Trousers + Greige Suede Block-Heel Pumps

Shop the Look
Isla Funnel Neck Button Blouse (Navy Spot)
$110.00 | One length only here, no petite option. It’s made to fall between the waist and hip and it skims the body, so it tucks without bulk.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants, Petite 26″ Inseam (Morel Grey)
$39.90 | Warmer than a flannel gray, closer to mushroom, in the true petite 26-inch inseam.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Natural Suede)
$165.00 | Stone-greige suede with a pointed toe and a covered block heel, and a vamp cut to show the top of your foot.
Lunch in town, and I want you to look at the shoes first. They’re a pale greige suede, a shade lighter than the taupe trousers.
When shoe and trouser sit that close in color, the leg doesn’t stop at the hem.
Up top is a navy blouse with a white spot and a short funnel neck, and you can leave the top buttons open for a small V. It’s a regular cut, so tuck it into the true petite trousers.
Most women reach for a black shoe here out of habit. It cuts the foot off and gives back the length you just gained.
5. Brick-Rust Cord Shirt Dress + Brown Tights + Chocolate Suede Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Maeve Cord Midi Shirt Dress (Spiced Apple)
$230.00 | Boden sells this in Petite, but there’s no petite-only link: choose Petite in the Fit selector on the page. Pure cotton corduroy with its own tie belt.
Super Opaque Control Top Tight (Espresso)
$20.00 | Heavy opaque brown, a shade lighter than the boots, so the leg reads tonal instead of flat.
Alfie Block Heel Leather Ankle Bootie (Chocolate Brown Suede)
$199.00 | Chocolate suede on a low covered block heel, with a shaft cut close to the ankle so the tights run straight into it.
For Thanksgiving or a family Sunday, try a brick-rust corduroy shirt dress with brown tights and chocolate suede boots.
The tie belt sits at your natural waist, not your hips, and that makes everything below it the longest part of the outfit.
Now the honest part: this dress is designed to fall at mid-calf, so even in Petite it lands below your knee. Brown tights running into brown boots keep that stretch of leg dark and continuous, which is what makes the longer hem work.
Tie the belt low and loose and the whole effect is gone.
6. Moss Green Ponte Dress + Deep Green Tights + Dark Green Suede Pumps

Shop the Look
Ula Ponte Short Dress (Brunswick Green, Navy)
$190.00 | Pick Petite in the Fit selector, since the link opens the general page. Crease-free ponte, a lined bodice and navy piping that draws a vertical line down the front.
Opaque Non Control Tight (Deep Forest)
$20.00 | Bluer and brighter than the dress, I’ll be honest, so think same family, not a match. Plain black opaques work too.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Dark Green Suede)
$165.00 | Dark olive-forest suede on a covered block heel: the shoe that makes the green leg look deliberate.
Sunday service in a cold church needs sleeves and a fabric that won’t crease in the pew, something I get into in my guide to church outfits in your 70s. This moss green ponte dress has both, plus navy piping and a front zip you wear open into a modest V.
It’s designed to fall above the knee, so in Petite expect it just above yours. Opaque green tights give you the coverage and carry the color down the leg.
Hem and tights in one color family turn the dress and the leg into a single shape.
The tights are a deeper bottle green than the dress, close but not matched. A bare or sheer leg under a hem this short is the thing to avoid.
7. Blush-Lilac Satin Wrap Top + Black Slim Trousers + Black Kitten-Heel Slingbacks

Shop the Look
Elms Long Sleeve Wrap Top (Burnished Lilac)
$98.00 | Sizes run S to XL in a regular cut, chosen because the hem is cropped to the waist. The wrap V runs fairly deep, so I’d add a camisole.
Petite Café Pant in Four-Season Stretch (Black)
$158.00 | This link opens J.Crew’s petite range. Slim, high in the rise, with a pressed front crease that draws its own vertical line.
Luciey Kitten Heel Slingback Pump (Black Leather)
$140.00 | Black leather, pointed toe, kitten heel: the point does the lengthening so the heel doesn’t have to.
Dinner out, and the color is softer than you might expect: a pale blush-lilac satin wrap top over black.
The top is a regular cut, but its hem is cropped to sit right at the waist of a high-rise trouser, so nothing needs tucking. The black trousers are true petite and stop above the ankle.
Showing the narrowest part of the ankle, then finishing in a pointed toe, adds length at the bottom of the leg without a high heel.
Trousers that break over the shoe erase that ankle. If yours crumple at the hem, they’re too long.
8. Bone Collarless Cropped Jacket + Black Knit + Black Ponte Trousers + Black Suede Pumps

Shop the Look
100% Merino Wool Collarless Cropped Jacket (Heather Bone)
$94.00 | Twenty-one inches is the number that matters: that’s the body length in a size S, in fully lined merino, with no petite cut needed.
Merino Sweater, Short Sleeve (09 Black)
$39.90 | Short sleeves keep it cool under a lined jacket, and the fine merino sits smooth where a blouse would bunch. Regular sizing from XXS.
Highgate Ponte Pants (Black)
$110.00 | Choose Petite in the Fit selector on Boden’s page. Slim ponte that sits at the natural waist and is designed to fall at the ankle.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Black Suede)
$165.00 | Black suede on a covered block heel, which finishes the black line with no shine to interrupt it.
Holiday drinks, no sequins required. A pale bone collarless jacket with gold-tone buttons goes over a black knit, black trousers and black suede pumps.
Black from neckline to toe makes one long line down the middle, and the jacket is short enough to frame that line instead of cutting it.
The jacket is a regular cut that measures 21 inches long in a size S, which is exactly why it works. Wear it open.
Swapping in a colored top is the common slip, because it chops the column in half.
9. Brick Red Cardigan + Tartan Pleated Skirt + Black Tights + Black Loafers

Shop the Look
Lightweight Cotton Cashmere Cardigan (Deep Brick Red)
$44.90 | Fine enough to tuck flat into a waistband, which is the whole point. It’s a regular cut that runs to the hip, so take the XS.
Multi Panel Wool Blend Skirt (Red/Green Check Hotch)
$249.00 | Petite is in the Fit selector, not the link, so select it on the page. Knife pleats, a full lining and a waistband that sits at your natural waist.
Super Opaque Control Top Tight (Black)
$20.00 | Matte, heavy and opaque: they do the coverage for a hem that sits above the knee.
Women’s Sloane Venetian Loafer (Black)
$150.00 | Plain black leather with no strap or bit, on a flexible rubber sole a touch thicker than a dress loafer’s.
Christmas at home: a brick red cardigan worn buttoned as a top, a red and green tartan skirt with knife pleats, black tights and black loafers.
I’d keep any check to a modest scale on a short frame, and this one is about as large as I’d go.
The skirt comes in Petite and is designed to fall above the knee, so the opaque black tights are doing the coverage. The cardigan is a regular hip-length cut, which means it has to be tucked.
Leave it hanging over the pleats and you lose your waist and half the skirt.
10. Midnight Teal Roll-Neck + Ink Navy Pencil Skirt + Navy Tights + Navy Suede Pumps

Shop the Look
Camilla Roll Neck Sweater (Midnight Teal)
$99.00 | At 21.9 inches in an XS, this regular-cut roll-neck tucks cleanly into a skirt with nothing left over.
Petite No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Lightspun Wool Blend (Ink)
$148.00 | J.Crew’s petite cut of a lined wool-blend pencil skirt, with a small front slit so you can walk properly.
Opaque Non Control Tight (Navy)
$18.50 | Silky, opaque and dark navy, with no control top, to carry the skirt color down the leg.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Navy Suede)
$165.00 | With navy tights underneath, this navy suede pump stops reading as a separate shoe and the leg simply keeps going.
Think in thirds for this one. A midnight teal roll-neck makes the top third, and an ink navy pencil skirt, navy tights and navy suede pumps make the rest.
Two thirds of you in one dark color gives your legs the larger share of your height.
The skirt is a true petite cut, made to hit at the knee. The sweater is regular, and short enough in XS or S to tuck without bulk.
An untucked sweater turns thirds into halves, and halves make anyone look shorter.
11. Navy Cotton Anorak + Pink Cashmere V-Neck + Gray Ankle Jeans + Navy Sneakers

Shop the Look
Perfect Anorak (Darkest Indigo Navy)
$228.00 | Cotton and unlined, in regular sizes only, at 32 inches from the shoulder. The drawcord waist is what earns it a place.
Elsie Cashmere V Neck Sweater (Pink Heather)
$170.00 | Dusty rose cashmere in the same regular-cut V-neck as look 1. XS or S gives you the roughly 22-inch length.
Bella Stretch Straight Jeans, 26″ Inseam (Greyed Out)
$50.00 | A faded mid gray in the 26-inch inseam listing, which gives a true ankle hem without a petite label.
Leather Side Detail Trainer (Navy)
$170.00 | Repeated from look 3 on purpose: here the navy picks up the jacket.
Here’s the jacket I had to think hardest about. It’s a navy cotton anorak with a hood and a drawcord waist, over a pink cashmere V-neck, gray ankle jeans and navy sneakers.
Pull that cord in at your natural waist and even your outer layer shows where you narrow.
Two honest notes: it’s unlined cotton, a between-seasons layer and not a waterproof, and it isn’t sold in petite. At 32 inches from the shoulder it reaches the upper thigh on a short frame, so start with the smallest size.
A loose cord is the mistake, because then it’s just a long box. For properly cold days, I’ve picked out coats cut for a petite frame.
12. Navy Draped Dress + Soft Blue Merino Cardigan + Navy Suede Slingbacks

Shop the Look
Erin Midi Half Sleeve Dress, Petite (Twilight Navy)
$138.00 | Opens straight onto petite sizes, 2P to 14P. The retailer itself says the regular length can sit long on shorter heights, so Petite is the one to buy.
Merino Cardigan (62 Blue)
$39.90 | Ultra-fine merino you can machine wash, in sizes from XXS. There’s no petite cut, so expect it around the high hip.
Hope Slingback Heels (Dark Navy)
$199.00 | Dark navy suede with hidden elastic in the strap and a 2 3/8-inch kitten heel.
Spring Sundays want a light layer, and the layer is where petite women get caught out.
This navy dress is a true petite cut with elbow sleeves and soft draping at one side of the waist. In Petite it lands just below the knee, and navy suede slingbacks continue the color.
Over it goes a soft blue merino cardigan worn open, so the waist stays visible and the skirt keeps its full length.
Buttoning the cardigan all the way down hides the one detail that gives this dress its shape.
13. Olive Sweater Tee + Flax Linen Ankle Trousers + Almond Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Lightweight Cotton Cashmere Relaxed Sweater Tee (Olive)
$29.90 | Crew neck, short sleeves and a relaxed fit in regular sizes only. No length is published, so I’d take the smaller of your two sizes.
100% European Linen Tapered Ankle Pants (Flax)
$33.50 | The 25 3/4-inch inseam makes this regular cut behave like a petite. Pull-on waist, pure linen, tapered leg.
Italian Suede Penny Loafer (Almond)
$84.00 | Pale sand suede within a shade of the linen, so trouser and shoe read as one piece.
Summer lunch, and the lightest look in the list: a dark olive sweater tee over flax linen trousers with almond suede loafers.
Keep the top ending at your high hip, above the widest part, because any longer and it starts shortening your leg.
No length is published for this tee and it’s a regular cut, so take the smaller size or half-tuck the front. The trousers aren’t petite either, but their 25 3/4-inch inseam finishes at the ankle, and the loafers nearly match them.
Sleeves here stop above the elbow, so bring a layer if you like more cover. What I see most often is a tee left long over the hip, and it never helps.
14. Oxblood Long-Sleeve Sheath + Sheer Tights + Nude Block-Heel Pumps + Burgundy Clutch

Shop the Look
Ginevra Belted Long Sleeve Sheath (Arresting Burgundy)
$138.00 | Standard sizing only, picked because the retailer cuts it to the knee. The belt comes off if the gold-tone chain buckle isn’t for you.
Sheer Tights with Control Top (Natural)
$20.00 | Sheer and light beige, so it only disappears on light to medium skin.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Light Natural Leather)
$165.00 | Nude-beige leather on a covered block heel, for light to medium skin tones.
Burgundy Haven Woven Clutch
$120.00 | Woven, structured and deep burgundy, with a detachable chain for when you need both hands.
A birthday or an anniversary deserves the dressiest thing here: a deep oxblood sheath with long sleeves, sheer tights, nude block-heel pumps and a woven burgundy clutch.
A shoe close to your own skin tone, under sheer tights, leaves no visible break between the hem and the floor.
This dress isn’t made in petite. It’s a tailored regular cut that the retailer ends at the knee, so expect it just below yours.
The pumps and tights shown suit light to medium skin, so match your own. A black shoe is the mistake, since it stops the leg at the ankle.

See the CalendarThe Model in the Photo Is Half a Foot Taller Than You: How to Read a Hem Before You Buy
Nearly every product photo in this list was shot on a model between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 11. A hem that sits above her knee can sit on yours, and trousers that look cropped on her can reach your ankle.
So stop judging by the picture and look for a number. An inseam or a body length in inches tells you more than any photo.
Then measure two things you already own and love: the inseam of your best trousers, and a favorite dress from shoulder to hem.
Keep those numbers in your phone and compare before you order. Where a retailer gives no measurement at all, as several here don’t, its own wording (“designed to fall above the knee,” “hits at waist”) is the next best clue.
You don’t need all 14. Pick the one trick that solves your most common problem, whether that’s a hem that sits too long or a jacket that covers too much, and try it with what’s already in your closet.
If I had to buy one thing first, it would be ankle-length trousers in a true petite cut, because five of these looks stand on exactly that.
When you want more, I’ve built another set of petite looks for women over 60 on the same thinking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What height counts as petite?
Petite sizing is cut for women around 5 feet 3 and under. It’s about height and proportion, not weight, so shoulders, sleeves and rises are shorter as well as hems.
Can I just buy regular sizes and have them hemmed?
For trousers and plain skirts, yes. Jackets and dresses are harder, because a tailor can shorten a hem but can’t easily move a shoulder seam or a waistline, and that’s where true petite sizing earns its keep.
Why do some of the links not open on the petite size?
Boden has no petite-only pages, so its links open the general listing and you choose Petite in the Fit selector. The J.Crew petite pieces, the Maggy London navy dress and the Quince 26-inch listings open on the short length directly.
Do I have to wear heels to look taller?
No. Six of these looks finish in loafers or sneakers. A shoe close in color to your trousers, your tights or your skin does more than an extra inch of heel.
Is a hem above the knee still wearable in my 70s?
Yes, with opaque tights in a color close to the dress or the shoe. Looks 6 and 9 both sit above the knee and rely on exactly that.
