Most old money winter color combinations come down to two shades and one decision: which garment gets which color.
That’s the part nobody spells out. So every look below names the pairing first, then tells you exactly where each shade goes.
You don’t need new clothes for most of these. You need to know that the camel goes on top and the ivory goes below.
Everything here is a solid. No plaid, no logos, no shiny buttons. If you want the wider theory, I’ve broken down the core shades this whole look is built on separately.
Here are 17 winter color combinations that look expensive, each one worn as a full outfit.
1. Camel + Ivory: Camel Crewneck, Ivory Pleated Midi Skirt and Tan Tall Boots

Shop the Look
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Camel)
$98 | Pure Mongolian cashmere in a true mid camel, with no mustard cast to throw off the ivory.
Pleated Matte Midi Skirt (Porcelain Ivory)
$60 | Its pleats give the ivory half real swing, and the matte finish keeps it from reading bridal.
Flat Stretch Boots (Acorn)
$220 | One step deeper than the sweater, these tan knee-high boots meet the hem so no leg shows.
Cashmere Scarf (32 Beige)
$69.90 | Uniqlo calls this shade beige, but it photographs camel and repeats the sweater at the neck.
Camel goes on top, in the sweater and the scarf. Ivory takes the whole bottom half in the pleated skirt, and the tan boots sit one step deeper than the knit.
Both shades are warm, which is why they look related instead of merely light. I’ve got more camel and cream outfits here if this pairing is your thing.
Where it goes wrong is a bright optic white skirt, which makes good camel look yellow.
2. Navy + Cream: Navy Cashmere Cardigan, Cream Turtleneck and Cream Pleated Trousers

Shop the Look
Navy Cashmere Knot Button Phoebe Cardigan
$248 | Covered knot buttons mean nothing shiny interrupts the navy.
Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater (01 Off White)
$99.90 | Soft warm cream rather than stark white, which is exactly what stops this looking nautical.
The Pleats For Days Pant (Ivory)
$268 | High waisted with a full pleated leg, so the cream column runs long and unbroken.
The James Loafer (Indigo Suede)
$375 | Navy suede with no hardware picks the cardigan color back up at the floor.
The cardigan and the suede loafers carry the navy. Everything between them is cream: the turtleneck and the wide pleated trousers, read as one long column.
Roughly two thirds cream to one third navy is what makes this look calm instead of sporty.
Swap the cream for pure white and you’re suddenly in a sailing uniform.
3. Chocolate + Pale Blue: Pale Blue Cashmere Crewneck, Chocolate Trousers and a Long Chocolate Coat

Shop the Look
Cashmere Slim Crew Sweater (Open Air Blue)
$74 | The only light piece in the outfit, in a sky blue that is clearly blue and never grey.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants (Espresso)
$39.90 | Cool, deep espresso in a clean straight leg, at a price that leaves room for the coat.
Long Sophia Coat (Chocolate)
$450 | Double-face wool in dark chocolate, long enough to frame the whole look when worn open.
Francy Kitten Heel Leather Bootie (Dark Brown Leather)
$189 | Smooth dark brown leather on a low kitten heel keeps the brown going to the ground.
Only the sweater is pale blue. The trousers, long coat and boots are all chocolate, so the blue sits inside a brown frame.
A cool pale shade against a deep brown is a strong value contrast, and keeping it to one piece is what makes it look deliberate.
Adding a matching blue scarf is the usual slip, because two blue pieces cancel each other out.
4. Charcoal + Burgundy: Charcoal Wool Blazer, Burgundy Turtleneck and Charcoal Trousers

Shop the Look
Italian Wool Tailored Blazer (Coal Melange)
$120 | Italian wool in a solid dark charcoal with tonal buttons, cut to the hip.
Mongolian Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater (Rich Burgundy)
$89.90 | Rich wine cashmere, deep enough to sit level with the grey around it.
Belgravia Ponte Pants (Charcoal)
$140 | A close charcoal to the blazer, with a subtle flare that lengthens the leg.
Women’s Whitney Weejuns Penny Loafer (Black)
$195 | Plain black penny loafers finish the dark frame without adding a third color.
Charcoal is the blazer and the trousers, close shades from two different makers rather than a matched suit. Burgundy is only the turtleneck, showing at the neck and between the lapels.
These two sit at almost the same depth, so the eye reads a change in color without any jump in brightness.
People reach for a true red here, and it shouts where wine would have murmured.
5. Forest Green + Camel: Forest Green Wool Sweater, Camel Wide-Leg Trousers and Chocolate Boots

Shop the Look
Hana Wool Sweater (Forest Green)
$355 | Proper bottle green, which was the hardest shade on this whole list to find done right.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Super Wide Leg Pants (Roasted Pecan)
$44.90 | Warm mid camel with a pressed front seam that makes ponte look like tailoring.
Tessay 9×9 Block Heel Leather Booties (Dark Brown Leather)
$118.30 | Chocolate leather with a plain shaft, the bridge between the green and the camel.
The sweater is forest green and the wide trousers are camel, split cleanly at a half tuck. Chocolate boots hold the bottom.
It’s dark on top and mid-tone below, and all three shades lean earthy, so nothing fights.
Black boots are the mistake I see most, because they cut the camel off at the ankle and cool the whole outfit down.
6. Grey + Ivory: Heather Grey Chunky Turtleneck, Ivory Straight Jeans and Grey Suede Boots

Shop the Look
Mongolian Cashmere Fisherman Turtleneck Sweater (Heather Grey)
$119.90 | Chunky ribbed cashmere in a light marled grey, and the flecks are what tie it to the jeans.
The Way-High Jean 2.0 (Calico Ecru)
$88 | Warm ecru denim that reads as winter white, cut to sit at the ankle.
Reraye Block Heel Ankle Leather Booties (Grey Suede)
$111.30 | Grey suede repeats the knit at the foot, so the ivory stays the only light block.
Heather grey sits on top in the chunky turtleneck and again in the suede boots. The jeans are ivory, and they’re the only light block.
The pale flecks in a marled grey echo the ivory, which is why this reads soft and not stark. If you want a coat, add a plain mid-grey one you own.
A black coat over this is the common error, and it flattens the grey to nothing.
7. Black + Camel: Long Black Coat, Camel Turtleneck and Black Wide-Leg Trousers

Shop the Look
The Metropolitan Coat (Black)
$650 | Fitted through the waist and properly long, this wool-cashmere blend coat is the black frame.
Camel Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198 | All the color in this outfit lives here, in warm mid camel cashmere.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Super Wide Leg Pants (Black)
$44.90 | Black wide legs with a pressed seam, so the bottom half disappears into the coat.
Reraye Block Heel Ankle Leather Booties (Black Leather)
$111.30 | Nothing on this smooth black heeled boot distracts from the camel, which is the point.
This is the usual camel coat over black, reversed. The coat, trousers and boots are black, and the turtleneck is the single block of camel.
A small amount of a warm color near the face does more than a whole coat of it.
Button the coat to the top and you’ve hidden the only reason the outfit works.
8. Navy + Burgundy: Navy Double-Breasted Coat, Burgundy Crewneck, Navy Trousers and Burgundy Loafers

Shop the Look
Sophia Coat in Wool (Dark Navy)
$375 | Hip length and double-breasted with dark buttons, so it does a peacoat’s job with no brass.
Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater (19 Wine)
$99.90 | Deep wine in pure cashmere gives all that navy something to frame.
Italian Wool Slim Leg Ankle Pants (Navy)
$89.90 | True dark navy wool, cropped at the ankle to show off the loafer.
Women’s Whitney Weejuns Penny Loafer (Wine)
$195 | Oxblood leather is the second hit of burgundy that makes the first one look planned.
The short double-breasted coat and the trousers are navy. Burgundy is the crewneck and then, again, the loafers.
That repeat is the mechanic: a color that shows up twice looks chosen. A plain white tee you own can show at the neck.
The slip is a tan bag, which adds a third color to a look that only needs two.
9. Oatmeal + Chocolate: Oatmeal Wrap Coat, Chocolate Rib-Knit Midi Dress and Chocolate Riding Boots

Shop the Look
Double-Faced Merino Wool Draped Collar Wrap Coat (Oat)
$200 | Pale flecked oat in double-faced merino, belted so it closes over the dress cleanly.
Cotton Cashmere Ribbed Long Sleeve Crew Midi Dress (Mocha Heather)
$72 | Labelled mocha, but it photographs dark chocolate, in a body-skimming cotton cashmere rib.
Minesa Riding Boots (Dark Brown)
$129 | Flat dark brown riding boots carry the brown column right down past the hem.
The wrap coat is oatmeal, pale and slightly flecked. Under it, the knit dress and riding boots are both chocolate, so brown runs from neck to toe.
Light outside and dark inside is the contrast here, and that unbroken brown column is what makes the pale coat look intentional.
A black bag or black gloves is the usual addition, and one black thing is enough to muddy the brown.
10. Olive + Cream: Olive Quilted Jacket, Cream Cable Sweater and Olive Corduroy Trousers

Shop the Look
Icons Cropped Liddesdale Quilted Jacket (Olive)
View at Barbour (via Tuckernuck)
$270 | The classic diamond quilt in olive with a brown corduroy collar, here in the cropped cut.
Ivory Cashmere Cable Knit Eloise Sweater
$298 | Cables all over in warm ivory cream cashmere, the bright centre of the whole outfit.
Organic Stretch Corduroy Straight Leg Pants (Seaweed)
$62 | Fine-wale corduroy in a muted dark olive that sits comfortably beside the jacket.
Duchess Chelsea Boot (Black Coffee)
$160 | Dark brown full-grain leather on a low heel, built for an actual walk.
Two olive pieces, the quilted jacket and the corduroys, sit either side of a cream cable sweater. Dark brown boots go underneath.
Olive is so muted that the cream becomes the brightest thing in the outfit, and it lands right in the middle.
Trade the cream for bright white and it looks like an undershirt against the olive.
11. Burgundy + Grey: Burgundy Cashmere Crewneck, Grey Flannel Trousers and Black Loafers

Shop the Look
Cashmere Sweater (19 Wine)
$99.90 | Wine cashmere does the job a burgundy coat would, with far less commitment.
Hudson Pant in Wool Flannel (Heather Grey)
$195 | Real wool flannel in mid grey, with a wide straight leg and an easy pull-on waist.
Manner Casual Leather Loafers (Black Leather)
$99 | Slim-soled black penny loafers, plain and quiet, exactly as a third piece should be.
Burgundy is the cashmere crewneck, the only colored piece. Grey is the wool flannel trousers, with black loafers and a grey or black coat you own over the top.
One deep color against plain mid grey always looks more expensive than two colors competing.
If this shade is your favorite, I’ve got a full run of burgundy outfits too. Just skip a pale silver grey trouser here, which widens the gap and makes the burgundy look harsh.
12. Navy + Forest Green: Navy Cashmere Crewneck, Forest Green Pleated Midi Skirt and Black Boots

Shop the Look
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Navy)
$98 | Plain enough to tuck flat into a pleated waistband, in a true dark navy.
Pleated Skirt (Forest)
$510 | Knife pleats in deep forest green, and the one real investment piece in this article.
Minesa Riding Boots (Black)
$129 | Slipped under the hem, these flat black riding boots mean no leg breaks the line.
Tuck a navy crewneck into a forest green pleated skirt and put black boots under the hem. If you want a jacket, use a plain navy one you own.
These are two darks of nearly equal depth, so the only thing separating them is the waistline.
Leave the sweater untucked and that line blurs, and the pairing just looks dark.
13. Camel + Pale Blue: Long Camel Coat, Pale Blue Oxford Shirt, Camel Crewneck and Light Blue Jeans

Shop the Look
Colette Wool Topcoat (Camel)
$160 | Long, single-breasted and properly camel, made to be worn open over the layers.
Everyday Oxford Shirt (Light Blue)
$88 | Solid pale blue with a real collar and cuff to peek out from under the knit.
Cashmere Crew Neck Sweater (32 Beige)
$99.90 | Despite the beige label this cashmere crew photographs camel, close to the coat.
Bella Rigid Straight Jeans (Powder Blue Raw Hem)
$60 | Clean light wash with no rips, which keeps the blue family pale.
Both the long coat and the crewneck are camel. Pale blue is the shirt collar and cuffs, and the jeans keep the blue light too. Finish with tan loafers you own.
Camel is really a quiet orange and blue is its opposite, so the two sharpen each other without either one being bright.
Dark indigo jeans are the usual swap, and they drag the whole look heavier.
14. Chocolate + Black: Chocolate Cashmere Turtleneck, Black Pleated Midi Skirt and Black Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater (39 Dark Brown)
$99.90 | Deep chocolate cashmere that still reads clearly brown beside the black.
Pleated Crepe Midi Skirt (Black)
$50 | Fluid crepe pleats move when you walk, so the dark half never looks heavy.
Kimdee 9×9 Knee High Leather Boots (Black Leather)
$174.30 | Slim black leather on a kitten heel closes the gap under the hem.
Wear chocolate on top in the turtleneck, plus a brown leather belt you own if you have one. Black takes the pleated skirt and the knee boots.
Brown and black only work when the brown is obviously brown.
Pick one so dark it could be faded black and the outfit looks like a laundry accident.
15. Ivory + Cream: Ivory Ribbed Turtleneck, Cream Wide-Leg Corduroys and Tan Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Winter White Arlo Ribbed Turtleneck
$128 | Winter white in a fitted rib, the lighter of the two shades.
Corduroy Volume Pants (01 Off White)
$49.90 | High in the waist and wide in the leg, in a warm cream one step deeper than the top.
Paige Ankle Boot (Cyprus Tan)
View at Sam Edelman (via Zappos)
$169.95 | Tan on a low block heel warms up all that pale.
Here is the one tonal look on the list. The turtleneck is winter white and the wide corduroys are cream, one shade deeper, with tan boots.
The step between the two is small but visible, and smooth rib against corduroy does the rest. An ivory jacket you own can go over the top.
Trying to match the two exactly is the error, because a near miss looks like a mistake and a clear step looks planned.
16. Charcoal + Navy: Long Navy Overcoat, Charcoal Turtleneck and Charcoal Wide-Leg Flannel Trousers

Shop the Look
The Luca Coat (Navy)
$595 | Dark buttons on a long double-breasted wool-cashmere blend keep this navy quiet.
Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater (08 Dark Gray)
$99.90 | Charcoal cashmere at the neck is where the coat gets shown up as blue.
Lou Trouser (Dark Grey)
$450 | Pure wool flannel in an ultra wide leg, a touch deeper than the knit.
Alfie Block Heel Leather Ankle Bootie (Black Leather)
$199 | Pointed black leather on a low block heel, mostly hidden under the wide hem.
The long overcoat is the one navy piece. The turtleneck and the wide flannel trousers are charcoal, with black boots.
Grey has no color of its own, so next to it the navy finally reads as blue in daylight, where it otherwise passes for black.
A black turtleneck is the usual shortcut, and then all three darks blur into one.
17. Taupe + Cream: Long Taupe Wool-Cashmere Coat, Cream Cashmere Polo and Taupe Pleated Trousers

Shop the Look
Wool Cashmere Tailored Long Coat (Melange Umber Taupe)
$210 | Mushroom taupe melange in wool and cashmere, tailored and long.
Mongolian Cashmere Polo Sweater (Ivory)
$79.90 | That collar is what turns soft cream cashmere into something you can wear to the office.
Erena Pleated Trousers (Dark Taupe)
$245 | Grey-brown taupe in a wool blend, pleated and wide in the leg.
Manner Casual Leather Loafers (Taupe Suede)
$99 | Sand taupe suede sits a shade paler than the trousers, which lightens the foot.
Three pieces carry the taupe: the long coat, the pleated trousers and, a shade paler, the suede loafers. Cream is the polo sweater in the middle.
Taupe is a cool grey-brown and cream is warm, so the cream glows a little inside it.
Mixing in a camel bag is the mistake, because camel’s warmth makes taupe look muddy.

Shop the BlueprintWhy Muted Shades Look Expensive and Bright Ones Don’t: It’s Saturation, Not the Color Itself
Look back over the 17 pairings and you’ll notice there isn’t one pure, bright color in the list.
Burgundy is red with the brightness taken down. Forest green is green pushed toward black, and camel is really a very quiet orange.
That’s the whole mechanism: a slightly greyed or darkened shade sits calmly next to almost any other one, so two of them together never fight.
In my experience a bright shade also shows up thin fabric quickly, while a muted one is far more forgiving.
Here’s a quick test at home. Hold the piece next to something truly bright, like a primary red book cover, and if yours looks dusty by comparison, it will pair with everything here.
Pick one pairing that uses two things already in your closet and wear it this week. Getting dressed gets faster once you stop thinking in outfits and start thinking in pairs.
My own starting point would be navy and cream, because almost everyone owns half of it already.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which colors count as old money for winter?
Camel, navy, ivory, cream, chocolate, charcoal, burgundy and forest green do most of the work, with taupe, olive and oatmeal as quieter extras. What they share is that none of them is bright.
How many colors should one outfit have?
Two is the sweet spot. Shoes and bag should repeat one of the two or stay in a plain leather neutral like black, brown or tan.
Do brown and black really go together?
Yes, as long as the brown is clearly brown, like a warm chocolate. The pairing fails only when the brown is so dark it looks like black that has faded.
Is ivory practical in winter?
More than you’d think, if you keep it on a knit, a skirt or an ankle-length jean and away from a hem that touches the ground. A warm winter white also looks softer in cold light than optic white does.
Can I copy these pairings with clothes I already own?
That’s the idea. Check which garment carries which color in the look you like, then match the placement with your own pieces before you buy anything.
