The right old money watches for women have three things in common: a small case, a quiet dial and a strap in plain leather or slim metal. Price is not one of them.

Inside is a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, which is the dependable choice at this price. Breda only calls it water-resistant and gives no depth, so I would treat it as a dry-weather watch.

The spec sheet is why it costs more: a sapphire crystal that resists scratches, 50 m of water resistance and a three-year warranty. The dark brown strap has a crocodile grain, which makes it the dressiest strap on this list.

The woven steel bracelet closes with a sliding buckle, so you set the length exactly where you want it. That matters on a small wrist, where a link bracelet usually ends up too loose or too tight.

The band is an expansion band, so it stretches over the hand with no clasp. Bulova will size it to order from 5.5 to 9 inches.

It comes with a three-year warranty and is splash resistant only.

7. Fossil Raquel

This is the tank on a bracelet. The rectangular case is 23 mm wide in gold-tone steel, with a white dial, gold Roman numerals and a small date at six.

It is rated to 50 m and carries a two-year warranty. Two honest notes from the reviews on the retailer’s page: the bracelet usually needs links taken out, and the date is small.

The gold-tone link bracelet resizes without tools, because the links unclip by hand. The whole watch weighs 36 g and handles splashes and hand washing.

The dial is champagne with slim applied markers and only two hands. It has a three-year warranty and is splash resistant only, so it comes off before you wash up.

11. Tissot Classic Dream 28mm

This is the stretch pick, and I am including it for one reason: it is Swiss made. The 28 mm case is two-tone, steel with yellow gold coating on the bezel and the centre links.

You get a sapphire crystal, 50 m of water resistance and a case only 7.1 mm thick, so it slides under a cuff. It costs more than double most of this list, and it is the one that will still look right in twenty years.

13. Breda Esther

A third shape, so your choice is not only round or rectangular. The Esther has a 26 mm square case with softened corners, in polished steel, and an ivory sunray dial.

It sits on a steel bracelet with wide brushed links and runs on a Japanese Miyota quartz movement. As with the Virgil, Breda gives no depth rating, so keep it dry.

None of these thirteen is pretending to be a $6,000 heirloom, and none of them needs to. The look was always about a case sized to the wrist, a dial you can read and a strap that ages well.

Start with the one you will wear every day. A watch only earns its place once it is on your wrist often enough to become a habit.
