A good christmas market outfit has one job before any other: keeping you warm while you stand still with a mug in your hand for far longer than you planned.
Walking keeps you warm. Queuing for roasted almonds does not, and that is where a thin coat and pretty boots let you down.
So every one of these christmas market outfit ideas starts with the coat and works inward from there.
Wool, down and cashmere do the real work. The boots are flat or low-heeled, and every skirt gets thick tights.
Where a coat sits on the lighter side, I say so and tell you what to wear under it. It is the same thinking as my rules for staying warm without the bulk: fewer, better layers in the right order.
Here are 17 looks for real December weather.
1. Long Camel Wool Coat + Cream Cable Knit + Tartan Scarf

Shop the Look
Gallery Coat (Camel)
$498 | Long, brushed and 65% wool, with front pockets for the moments your gloves come off.
Low Gauge Cable Sweater (01 Off White)
$49.90 | Chunky cables bring the texture here. With only 6% wool in the blend, count on it for the look and not the heat.
Mongolian Cashmere Tartan Scarf (Oatmeal/Red Tartan)
$82.00 | Pure cashmere and 70 inches long, enough to loop once and still hang.
Duchess Chelsea Boot (Black Coffee)
$160 | Full-grain leather lined in glove leather, on a studded rubber sole with a 1.25 inch heel.
Camel and cream sit in the same warm family, so the eye reads one soft column from collar to hem. The coat is a brushed blend with 65% wool, cut long enough to cover the thigh that a short jacket leaves cold.
The cable sweater is mostly acrylic and nylon, so I treat it as texture and add a thin wool layer beneath on a truly cold day. Straight dark jeans and very dark brown chelsea boots finish it.
Styling tip: Loop the oatmeal and red tartan scarf once and let both ends hang inside the open coat, so the red runs down the front.
2. Navy Topcoat + Grey Merino Turtleneck + Wide Grey Wool Trousers

Shop the Look
Chiara Topcoat in Double Face (Navy)
$398 | Wool-rich double-face cloth with 5% cashmere and a hem below the knee. It is unlined, so layer under it.
Gray Merino Whitney Turtleneck
$148 | Fine-gauge pure merino is the layer that makes an unlined coat workable after dark.
Mid-Rise Wide-Leg Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Heather Medium Gray)
$198.00 | With a 22.5 inch leg opening, these have the sweep to cover a boot, and the pull-on waist sits flat over a tucked knit.
Duchess Chelsea Boot (Black)
$160.00 | The same boot as look 1, here in a black that disappears under grey wool.
At night, colors that are close in depth look sharper than contrast does. Navy over two greys gives one long, unbroken line under the stall lights.
The topcoat is 75% wool with a little cashmere, but it is unlined, so the merino turtleneck is not optional. The trousers are a lightweight wool, and I wear a thin thermal layer under them for a long evening.
Styling tip: Let the wide hem fall over the top of the black chelsea boot, so no ankle is left out in the cold.
3. Belted Black Down Puffer + Cream Wool Rib Knit + Shearling-Lined Boots

Shop the Look
Responsible Down Belted Puffer Maxi Coat (Black)
$200.00 | Goose down at 700+ fill power, a two-way zipper so you can open the hem to walk, and a belt that gives it a waist.
Fitted Rib-Knit Wool Sweater (Cream)
$79.99 | In a fitted 100% wool rib, the mock neck fills the gap a puffer collar leaves.
UGG Classic Short II Boot (Black)
$194.95 | Sheepskin lines the shaft and sits under the foot. UGG makes whole sizes only.
The problem with a long puffer is that it erases your shape. A belt fixes that with one line at the waist, which is why this one reads as a coat and not a duvet.
This is a serious cold-weather look: 700+ fill power goose down over a pure wool rib sweater, with sheepskin-lined boots.
Black straight jeans and a cream beanie repeat the two colors.
Styling tip: Tie the belt snugly and ease a little of the coat up over it, so the waist looks soft instead of cinched.
4. Brown Faux Shearling Jacket + Ivory Fisherman Sweater + Dark Brown Cords

Shop the Look
Dirt Road Jacket (Faux Shearling, Dirt Road)
$198 | My pick for texture, not temperature: soft polyester pile that needs a serious sweater beneath it.
Cashmere Fisherman Sweater (Ivory)
$395 | Midweight Mongolian cashmere in a boxy fisherman rib, and the true source of warmth in this look.
The Way-High Corduroy Pant (Coffee Bean)
$128 | Fine-wale corduroy cut to the floor, so the hem sits over the boot instead of above it.
L.L.Bean Women’s Bean Boot 8″ (Tan/Bean Boot Brown/Gum)
$150 | Waterproof leather on a rubber bottom with a chain-tread sole. There is no lining, so plan on thick socks.
Pile, rib and corduroy: three textures in brown and ivory. That contrast is what stops an earth-toned outfit from going flat.
A word on warmth. The jacket is cropped polyester faux shearling, the lightest outer layer on this list, so the cashmere fisherman sweater is the real insulation and I save this look for a bright midday market.
Unlined duck boots handle wet ground, over thick wool socks.
Styling tip: Wear a small crossbody bag over the sweater and under the jacket, which keeps both hands free.
5. Hunter Green Wool Coat + Off-White Cashmere Turtleneck + Chocolate Knit Skirt

Shop the Look
Cotswold Wool Coat (Hunter Green)
$380.00 | Half wool, fully lined, and a green dark enough to behave like a neutral.
Cashmere Sweater | Turtleneck (01 Off White)
$99.90 | Off-white cashmere right at the neck, where an open coat lets the cold in first.
Chocolate Brown Knit Philomena Midi Skirt (Hyacinth House)
$128.00 | Straight, with a flat elastic waist that lies smooth under a tucked knit. It is not a wool skirt, so it needs lined tights.
Knee-High Riding Boots in Leather (Sweet Chestnut)
$398.00 | The investment in this look: smooth chestnut leather to the knee, on a rubber outsole.
Borrowed from the countryside, dark green over chocolate brown is two deep, quiet colors side by side. The off-white turtleneck between them looks brighter for it.
The coat is half wool, fully lined and falls below the knee. The skirt is a viscose and nylon knit, not wool, so thick lined tights are part of the outfit.
The trick with a longer skirt in cold weather is closing every gap, and chestnut riding boots that meet the midi hem do exactly that.
Styling tip: Tuck the turtleneck fully into the skirt, so the waist stays visible when the coat is open.
6. Wine Red Boucle Wool Coat + Black Cashmere Turtleneck + Black Wide-Leg Trousers

Shop the Look
Aylesford Wool Coat (Vino)
$320 | Tailored like a blazer in 80% wool, with a back pleat so it moves when you walk.
Cashmere Sweater | Turtleneck (09 Black)
$99.90 | Every all-black base needs one soft piece, and pure cashmere at the neck is it.
Wide Leg Trouser in Seasonless Wool (Black)
$275 | High-waisted with a subtle wide leg in Italian wool. The cloth is lightweight, so plan a thermal layer.
One strong color over a head-to-toe black base is the simplest formula on this list. The black column lengthens you, and the wine red does all the festive work.
The coat is 80% wool and fully lined, but it stops at the thigh, the shortest wool coat here. With lightweight wool trousers, I add thermal tights underneath and choose this for a shorter evening visit.
Finish with black chelsea boots on a rubber sole.
Styling tip: Button the coat all the way up. Closed, it reads as a neat tailored jacket over the wide trousers.
7. Charcoal Wool Coat + Red Merino Sweater + Waterproof Chelsea Boots

Shop the Look
Italian Wool Classic Single-Breasted Coat (Heather Charcoal)
$175.00 | Italian wool Melton at 80%, fully lined, and long enough to cover the thigh.
Merino Sweater (15 Red)
$39.90 | Machine-washable extra-fine merino, in the one shot of color this look runs on.
Women’s Thermal #566 Premium Waterproof Leather Chelsea Boots (Black)
$249.95 | Insulated and waterproof, with sheepswool under the foot. Built for exactly this kind of standing around.
Charcoal cools a red knit down. One red sweater under a grey coat looks deliberate, not themed.
The coat is an 80% Italian wool Melton with a full lining, and the pure merino sweater is fine enough to sit under it without bulk. Add straight blue jeans.
The boots are my favorite part: waterproof leather, insulated, with a wool-lined footbed.
Styling tip: Wear the coat open while you walk and button it the moment you stop, because standing still is when the cold gets in.
8. Cream Wrap Coat + Camel Cashmere Turtleneck + Camel Wool Trousers

Shop the Look
Double-Faced Merino Wool Draped Collar Wrap Coat (Rich Creme Ivory)
$200.00 | Hand-stitched double-faced merino with a draped collar and a belt you can remove.
Camel Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198 | Camel cashmere with a rolled neck, doing the insulating that an unlined coat can’t.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Camel Beige)
$198.00 | Slim through the thigh and straight below, close enough in shade to the sweater to read as one piece.
Tonal dressing works when the shades step in one direction. Here it goes light on the outside and deeper within, so the camel shows as a warm core each time the coat moves.
The coat is pure double-faced merino and long, but unlined. That makes the cashmere turtleneck the working layer, and I keep this look for a dry, still afternoon.
Tan ankle boots with a ridged sole and a wool beret finish it.
Styling tip: When you wear the coat open, knot the belt behind your back so the ends stay out of the way.
9. Grey Wool-Blend Cape Jacket + Navy Cashmere Turtleneck + Black Riding Boots

Shop the Look
Gray Odelie Cape
$198 | Wide raglan sleeves and side pockets give the cape shape without trapping your arms.
Midnight Navy Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198.00 | Dark navy cashmere, rolled at the neck, which is where a short jacket needs backup.
Cashmere Lined Leather Gloves (Black)
$50.00 | Lambskin outside, cashmere inside, and fingertips that work a phone screen without coming off.
Minesa Riding Boots (Black)
$129 | Side zip, 1.3 inch stacked heel: the easy tall boot. The upper is faux leather.
Proportion first: a short, wide top half needs a narrow bottom half. The boxy cape-style jacket sits over slim dark jeans tucked into tall black boots.
The jacket is half wool and half polyester and it is short, so it suits a milder day or a city break where you step in and out of cafés.
The navy cashmere turtleneck and cashmere-lined leather gloves do the insulating. Wide sleeves let air in at the wrist, which is why the gloves matter.
Styling tip: Wear it belted, which gives the wide shape a waist and keeps it close in the wind.
10. Dark Olive Quilted Coat + Fair Isle Sweater + Waterproof Suede Chelsea Boots

Shop the Look
The Walk in the Park Jacket (Dark Olive)
$398 | Diamond quilting, a ribbed collar and a zip-and-snap front, in an olive that sits well with any knit.
Mae Fair Isle Knitted Sweater (Mink, Fair Isle)
$199 | Both wool and alpaca are in the blend, and the pattern gives a plain coat something to frame.
Cole Haan Lyndon Waterproof Chelsea Booties (Tobacco Suede Waterproof)
$208 | Suede you can wear on wet cobbles, because this pair is made waterproof.
Patterned knits need a quiet frame. Dark olive is muted enough to let the cream Fair Isle, with its pink and green pattern, be the one busy thing in the outfit.
This is my damp, mild-day look. The coat is a quilted cotton and nylon shell with no stated fill, so I don’t count on it for deep cold and add a thin thermal top under the sweater when the temperature drops.
Related: polished outfits for damp winter days
Tan suede chelsea boots are waterproof, and dark jeans go underneath. A brimmed wool hat beats an umbrella because both hands stay free.
Styling tip: Zip the coat to the chest and leave the collar open, so the pattern shows at the neck.
11. Black Peacoat + Ivory and Navy Striped Sweater + Grey Flannel Trousers

Shop the Look
Black Harley Peacoat
$328 | Notched lapels, angled flap pockets and a mid-thigh hem: the peacoat as it should be cut.
Ivory and Navy Stripe Cotton Genevieve Crewneck Sweater
$248 | Its high ribbed neck sits neatly inside the coat collar, and the heavy knit holds its own underneath.
Hudson Pant in Wool Flannel (Heather Grey)
$195 | Wool flannel through and through, on a drawstring waist. About as comfortable as tailoring gets.
Stripes under a double-breasted coat is a classic for a reason. The horizontal lines break up the dark block of the peacoat right where it opens at the chest.
The peacoat is half wool, lined and mid-thigh, so the trousers have to look after the lower half. Wool flannel does that well, since its brushed surface holds warmth in a way smooth suiting does not.
For a weekend trip, this is the one I’d pack. Every piece rewears.
Styling tip: Tuck a plain scarf inside the lapels instead of over them, so the buttons stay on show.
12. Long Black Double-Breasted Coat + Charcoal Knit Sweater Dress + Black Riding Boots

Shop the Look
Gaia Double-Breasted Coat (Black)
$550 | Peak lapels and padded shoulders in an 80% wool blend, cut oversized so a knit dress fits beneath.
Ribbed Buttoned Sweater Dress (Charcoal Gray)
$248 | Long sleeves, a mock neck, a button front and a pleated skirt. By the retailer’s own description, the rib is cut close.
Florina Leather Riding Boot (Black Leather)
$299 | Real leather with a side zip and a heel of about an inch, flat enough for a full evening on stone.
The only dress on this list earns its place because nothing is exposed. A ribbed sweater dress to the ankle, tall boots under it and a very long coat over both give you overlapping layers from neck to floor.
The coat is 80% wool, and the dress is a wool and nylon rib with long sleeves and a mock neck. I still wear fleece-lined tights underneath.
A deep red scarf is the only color I’d add.
Styling tip: Wrap a wide scarf high and tuck the ends inside the coat, which seals the neckline.
13. Navy and Green Check Wool Coat + Navy Cashmere Crewneck + Suede Lug-Sole Boots

Shop the Look
Patch Pocket Wool Blend Coat (Navy, Green and Blue Check)
$470 | No other coat here has more wool in it, and the patch pockets are trimmed with contrast binding.
Midnight Navy Cashmere Elizabeth Crewneck
$178.00 | Lightweight cashmere in the coat’s own navy, so the check stays the only pattern.
Lug-Sole Loafer Boots in Suede (Coffee Bean)
$200.99 | Loafer front, rubber lug sole: grip, without a heavy hiking shape.
When the coat is the pattern, everything else goes plain and matches its darkest color. A navy knit and navy straight trousers give the tartan-style check room to breathe.
At 95% wool with a full lining and a hem below the knee, this is the most wool-rich coat on the list.
The cashmere crewneck is a lightweight one, so on a bitter day I add a thin layer beneath it. Dark brown suede loafer boots bring a rubber lug sole, which is what you want on worn cobbles.
Styling tip: Choose a plain navy scarf here, so the coat stays the only pattern.
14. Grey Herringbone Wool Coat + Dark Cherry Pleated Skirt + Tall Brown Boots

Shop the Look
Cotswold Wool Coat (Grey Herringbone)
$460 | Herringbone gives a grey coat depth up close and calm from a distance.
Pleat Side Split Midi Skirt (Dark Cherry)
$180.00 | Fully lined, with pockets that close on hidden magnets. Lovely movement, though the fabric is not a warm one.
HEATTECH Extra Warm Pile Lined Tights (09 Black)
$19.90 | Brushed pile lining is the reason a skirt belongs on this list at all.
Minesa Riding Boots (Dark Brown)
$129 | Just below the knee on a low stacked heel, tall enough to meet a low-calf hem.
Herringbone behaves like a solid from a few steps away, so it sits next to a strong color without competing. Dark cherry against grey is the proof.
The skirt is a lined woven polyester with a side split, so it brings movement and no warmth of its own. Pile-lined thermal tights make it work for hours outside, and tall dark brown boots cover the rest.
The coat is half wool, and I add an ivory turtleneck on top.
Styling tip: Pick fully opaque black tights. Through a side split, sheer ones look cold.
15. Coffee Brown Hooded Down Coat + Brown Knit Set + Shearling-Lined Boots

Shop the Look
Long Maxi Down Coat with Hood (Coffee)
$237.99 | Duck down at 700+ fill under a shell the maker calls windproof and water-resistant, with a hood for when the weather turns.
Washable Knit V-Neck Sweater | Smooth (38 Dark Brown)
$39.90 | One half of a matched set, machine washable, in the same dark brown as the trousers.
Washable Knit Pants | Smooth (38 Dark Brown)
$39.90 | An elastic waist and a soft knit make these the easiest trousers here. Add a thermal layer beneath.
UGG Dusted Cocoa Classic Short II Boots
$195 | Seventeen millimeters of sheepskin lining, in a cocoa that melts into the rest of the brown.
This doesn’t look like ski wear, and the reason is color discipline. Coat, knit set and boots sit within a shade or two of each other, which makes a practical puffer look considered.
It is my coldest-day outfit: a long down coat with 700+ fill and a hood. The knit set is mostly acrylic, comfortable more than insulating, so I add a thermal base on a frosty morning.
Styling tip: Put one light piece near your face, a cream beanie or scarf, so the brown has something to play against.
16. Cream Teddy Coat + Black Cashmere Turtleneck + Black Wool Trousers

Shop the Look
Vince Teddy Coat (Natural)
$119.50 | Plush pile with a full lining, a collared neckline and buttons: the texture piece of the whole list.
Super Fine Cashmere Classic Turtleneck Sweater (Black)
$198 | Very fine, light cashmere that slips under a bulky coat without adding width.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Black)
$198 | Ultra high rise and a straight leg in wool, the clean black line a voluminous coat depends on.
Plush cream pile over a slim, matte black base: texture against a flat ground. That contrast is what makes a teddy coat look chic instead of cuddly.
Be realistic about it, though. The coat is lined polyester pile at knee length and blocks wind less well than wool or down, and the cashmere turtleneck is a lightweight one.
I wear this on a mild evening, with a thin thermal top under the knit, black ankle boots with a grippy sole and a black beret.
Styling tip: Keep everything under the coat narrow, because volume on top only works over a clean straight leg.
17. Deep Red Wool-Cashmere Coat + Navy Cashmere Turtleneck + Brown Chelsea Boots

Shop the Look
Wool Cashmere Tailored Long Coat (Rouge Red)
$210.00 | Ninety percent wool, ten percent cashmere, a fitted waist and a full lining, in a red so deep it is nearly oxblood.
Super Fine Cashmere Classic Turtleneck Sweater (Bright Navy)
$198 | Navy next to oxblood is quieter than black would be, and this knit is thin enough to tuck.
Chelsea Pull-On Boots in Leather (Peppercorn)
$278 | Plain brown leather on a rubber outsole, no hardware, with a heel just over an inch.
I trust red with navy more than almost any of my cold-weather color pairings, because navy calms red where black sharpens it. This red is a dark oxblood, which is why it looks rich and not loud.
The coat is 90% wool with 10% cashmere, fully lined and long enough to reach the calf.
Dark indigo jeans and brown leather chelsea boots on a rubber sole keep it easy for a full day of walking. A crossbody bag leaves both hands free.
Styling tip: Keep the scarf navy, since a second red anywhere competes with the coat.

See the 30 OutfitsThe Mug Deposit: Why a Christmas Market Outfit Has to Work With One Hand
At most German and Austrian Christmas markets, mulled wine comes in a real ceramic mug, and you pay a small deposit for it on top of the drink. You get the deposit back when you return the mug, or you keep the mug as a souvenir.
That one detail means you spend most of the visit with one hand occupied.
So the outfit has to work one-handed: a crossbody bag instead of a tote, a coat you can fasten without putting anything down, and gloves you can pull off quickly and push into a pocket.
Many stalls still prefer cash. I keep coins and small notes in a zipped pocket I can reach with my free hand, not at the bottom of a bag.
If you plan to keep the mug, bring a small cloth bag for it, since it goes home damp and sticky.
Start with the coat you already own and check its label. If it is wool-rich or down, you are most of the way there, and the rest is a real knit, a thermal layer and boots with grip.
Pick by the forecast, not by the photo: down for frost, wool for a dry cold evening, and the lighter jackets for a mild afternoon.
Nearly every knit and trouser here will carry on working all month, which is the idea behind my Christmas capsule wardrobe.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many layers do I need for a Christmas market?
Three is enough if they are the right three: a thin thermal or merino base, a wool or cashmere knit, and a wool or down coat. Add a scarf and gloves, and make sure the coat opens easily for when you step inside a heated tent or shop.
Can I wear a skirt or dress to a Christmas market?
Yes, as long as no leg is left bare. Wear pile-lined or fleece-lined tights, tall boots that meet the hem, and a coat at least as long as the skirt.
What shoes are best for a Christmas market?
Flat or low-heeled boots with a rubber sole and enough room for thick socks. Cobbles get wet and slippery, and a thin leather sole lets the cold from the ground straight through.
What should I wear to a German Christmas market in the evening?
Plan for several hours on your feet after dark, when it is coldest. I’d choose the long down coat in look 3 or look 15, or a wool-rich coat over cashmere, with a crossbody bag and lined gloves.
Which of these outfits is the warmest?
The two down coats, looks 3 and 15, are the ones I reach for in real frost. Among the wool coats, look 13 and look 17 have the highest wool content and a full lining.
