18 Elegant Red Dress Outfits

A red dress outfit is the one thing I’d wear to every date on the winter calendar, from the first Christmas party to dinner on Valentine’s Day.

One note before we start: red here runs from bright red and crimson to wine, burgundy and dark cherry. The deeper shades are still red dresses, just the quieter end of the family.

What makes a red dress outfit elegant is almost never the dress. It’s the one color you put next to it.

So most of these looks are a dress plus a single styling piece: an ivory coat, a navy topcoat, chestnut boots, a pearl earring. The order follows the season, with Christmas first, then New Year’s Eve and deep winter, then Valentine’s Day.

If you’d rather plan December around a handful of pieces, my ten-piece Christmas capsule does that job. This list is for the dress.

1. Dark Cherry Lace Tea Dress + Ivory Wool Wrap Coat

Shop the Look

$360.00 | Long cuffed sleeves and a ruffled neckline give this lace dress its old-world feel.

Double-Faced Merino Wool Draped Collar Wrap Coat (Rich Creme Ivory)

View at Quince

$200.00 | Double-faced merino with a draped collar, and the reason the dark cherry looks so rich.

Lace in dark cherry does what velvet usually gets the credit for: it looks rich without any shine. This tea dress has long cuffed sleeves, a ruffled neckline and a low midi hem, so an ivory wool wrap coat is all a Christmas cocktail party asks of it.

Add sheer black tights and low gold heels from your own closet.

Ivory beside deep red is the most expensive-looking pairing of the season.

2. Burgundy Belted Sheath Dress + Graphite Herringbone Blazer + Opaque Black Tights

$328.00 | Graphite herringbone in a relaxed cut is softer than a plain charcoal suit jacket.

Ultimate Opaque Matte Tights (Black)

$46.00 | Matte and fully opaque, which is what a knee-length hem needs in December.

Tailoring is what gets red past the office door. A burgundy belted sheath with long sleeves and a knee-length hem sits under a relaxed graphite herringbone blazer, with opaque matte black tights below.

Black block-heel pumps finish it for the office Christmas party.

Grey is the color that makes burgundy look deliberate at work.

3. Bright Red Knit Maxi Dress + Chestnut Leather Riding Boots

$198.00 | A scalloped hem is the one detail that lifts this straight red knit maxi.

Knee-High Riding Boots in Leather (Sweet Chestnut)

Knee-High Riding Boots in Leather (Sweet Chestnut)

$398.00 | Plain leather, a low stacked heel and no hardware: riding boots as they should be.

Bright red needs brown leather, not black. This knit maxi is long-sleeved and straight, with a round neck and a scalloped hem, and chestnut riding boots disappear under it for a December day of gift shopping.

Throw on the camel coat you already own and carry a tan shoulder bag.

Red with chestnut and camel is warmer and far less obvious than red with black.

4. Red Check Collared Midi Dress + Dark Brown Leather Knee Boots

Shop the Look

Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Dark Brown Leather)

$229.00 | With a stacked block heel like this, you can stand at a market stall all afternoon.

Think of a check with red in it as the country cousin of the red dress. I’d pick it over a novelty knit every time.

The collared midi has long sleeves and a fitted waist, and its red, blue and green check wants dark brown leather knee boots with a stacked block heel. For a Christmas market afternoon, add navy tights and a navy coat.

Nothing says December more quietly than a good check.

5. Wine Silk Midi Dress + Black Velvet Blazer + Pearl Drop Earrings

$168.00 | Pearl drops on gold vermeil are my pick for the only jewelry this look gets.

Shine against matte is the whole trick on Christmas Eve. The wine silk dress is a sleeveless bias-cut tank midi, so the black velvet blazer is not optional: it covers your arms and makes the look work in winter.

Pearl drops, sheer black tights and black slingbacks do the rest at dinner.

Silk, velvet and one pair of pearls is all the sparkle this dinner needs.

6. Crimson Cable-Stitch Knit Dress + Ivory Cotton Cardigan

$188.00 | Chunky cotton, bishop sleeves and gold buttons make this cardigan feel dressed.

Christmas Day at home deserves a real dress, just a soft one. Crimson knit with cable stitch on the skirt and cuffs falls to a midi, and a chunky ivory cotton cardigan with gold buttons sits slightly cropped over it.

Charcoal tights and black velvet flats keep it house-friendly.

A knit dress beats matching pajamas in every single photo.

7. Cranberry Jacquard Fit-and-Flare Dress + Pale Grey Wool Coat

Shop the Look

Cranberry Jacquard Adelaide Dress

$298.00 | Jacquard carries its own quiet pattern, so the cranberry never looks flat.

Sophia Coat in Wool (Light Heather Grey)

Sophia Coat in Wool (Light Heather Grey)

View at Alex Mill

$375.00 | Hip-length double-face wool in light heather grey, short enough to show the full skirt.

Pale grey calms a red dress faster than any other color. The cranberry jacquard has a collared V-neck, a button placket, short sleeves and a full skirt that lands around the knee, which is why the light heather grey wool coat matters on the way to Christmas Day lunch.

The coat stops at the hip, so the skirt still swings below it. Grey suede boots are the natural finish.

Cool grey is the most underrated partner red has.

8. Red Tie-Neck Midi Dress + Black Wool Coat

$175.00 | Italian melton wool, fully lined, with horn buttons: a black coat that looks tailored.

One bow at the neck is all the decoration a bright red dress should carry. This tie-neck midi has gathered shoulders, an elasticated waist and a fluid skirt, and a tailored black wool coat goes over it for a friend’s Christmas drinks.

Opaque black tights and pointed silver flats keep the metallic at your feet. If you’re dressing for the same kind of evening in your sixties, these festive, not flashy party looks are worth a read.

Red, black and one flash of silver never fails.

9. Wine Silk Long-Sleeve Maxi Dress + Dark Camel Topcoat

Chiara Topcoat in Double Face (Dark Camel)

Chiara Topcoat in Double Face (Dark Camel)

View at J.Crew

$450.00 | Three buttons, Italian double-face wool and a hem below the knee make this the investment piece.

Camel, not black, is what makes wine silk look like New Year’s Eve. The maxi is bias cut with a boat neck and long bell sleeves, and a dark camel topcoat that hits below the knee lets the silk show underneath.

One practical note: this dress is on preorder and ships later in the season, so order early. Gold block heels and a small gold clutch finish it, and my warm New Year’s Eve outfits cover the nights when silk alone won’t do.

A long sleeve and a long hem are more glamorous than any sequin.

10. Crimson Ruched Jersey Midi Dress + Chocolate Wool Coat

red dress outfit elegant enough for New Year's Eve dinner: crimson ruched jersey midi dress with long sleeves and a long chocolate brown wool coat

Shop the Look

Jasmine Ruched Jersey Dress (Crimson Red)

$149.00 | Ruched jersey moves with you, and the long sleeves keep bright crimson composed.

Long Sophia Coat (Chocolate)

Long Sophia Coat (Chocolate)

View at Alex Mill

$450.00 | Long double-face wool in chocolate, the richest color you can put over red.

Chocolate brown is the color that makes crimson look expensive. A ruched jersey midi with long sleeves drapes at the waist, and it is the most body-skimming dress here, so the long chocolate wool coat gives it weight for a New Year’s Eve restaurant dinner.

Sheer brown tights and bronze heels keep everything warm-toned.

Red and brown is the pairing I’d put money on for the next ten winters.

11. Burgundy Pleated-Skirt Dress + Navy Topcoat

$148.00 | Pleats from the waist give this burgundy dress movement every time you walk.

Chiara Topcoat in Double Face (Navy)

Chiara Topcoat in Double Face (Navy)

$450.00 | Navy this time: the same below-the-knee topcoat as look 9, with a touch of cashmere.

Two dark colors sharpen each other, which is the case for burgundy with navy. The dress has a crew neck, short sleeves and a pleated A-line skirt that falls below the knee, and a navy wool topcoat goes over it for a January theatre night.

Short sleeves are fine in a heated auditorium, and navy tights with navy suede pumps carry the color down.

Burgundy and navy looks like you thought about it for longer than you did.

12. Deep Wine Velvet Midi Dress + Charcoal Wool-Cashmere Coat

red dress outfit for a January birthday dinner: deep wine ruched velvet midi dress with long sleeves and a tailored charcoal wool coat

Shop the Look

Mya Ruched Velvet Midi Dress (Beetroot Red)

$199.00 | Stretch velvet with ruching, in a beetroot so deep it photographs nearly black.

Wool Cashmere Blazer Coat (Heather Charcoal)

Wool Cashmere Blazer Coat (Heather Charcoal)

View at Quince

$200.00 | Wool with ten percent cashmere, single-breasted and cut like a long blazer.

Velvet earns its place in January, when everything else in the wardrobe looks flat. This one is ruched, long-sleeved and midi, in a wine so deep it reads almost black in low light, and a heather charcoal wool-cashmere coat tailors it for a birthday dinner.

Sheer black tights, black patent slingbacks and one slim gold chain are enough.

Deep wine velvet is the grown-up answer to the little black dress.

13. Rust Red Satin Slip Dress + Black Wool Coat + Black Pointed Pumps

$175.00 | Worn here for coverage: the slip is sleeveless, and this coat is its outdoor half.

Ezra Pointy Toe Pumps (Black Leather)

$69.99 | Plain black leather and a pointed toe, with nothing on them to date.

Valentine’s dinner does not need fire-engine red. The satin slip is a muted rust-burgundy, calf-length and slim, with a lace-inset scoop neck.

It is also sleeveless, so it leans on the black wool coat outside and a fine black cardigan at the table. Black pointed pumps keep the line long, and my old money Valentine’s date outfits go beyond the dress.

The quieter the red, the more romantic it looks.

14. Wine Knitted Polo Dress + Dark Espresso Suede Knee Boots

$365.00 | Pull-on dark espresso suede with a Cuban heel, softer than black against wine.

Put a collar on a knit dress and you can wear it to a gallery. Wine-colored and long, with a skipper polo neckline, this one goes with dark espresso suede knee boots on a Cuban heel for a daytime Valentine’s date.

Any grey wool coat and a brown crossbody bag will finish it.

Daytime red should always be this relaxed.

15. Raspberry Red Knitted Shirt Dress + Ivory Boucle Blazer

$398.00 | Ivory boucle with a striped rib collar, sporty enough to stop the look feeling prim.

Navy trim is what stops a raspberry red dress looking sweet. The knitted shirt dress has a collar, a belt and long sleeves, with navy running down the front and around the cuffs, and an ivory boucle blazer lightens it for Galentine’s brunch.

Tan flats and a tan top-handle bag keep the accents pale.

Chic with a capital C, and not a heart print in sight.

16. Wine Jersey Wrap Midi Dress + Gold Pendant + Sheer Black Tights

$37.00 | Sheer black with light control, so a jersey dress hangs smoothly over them.

Staying in is not a reason to dress down. A wine-red jersey wrap dress with elbow sleeves and a midi hem is soft enough for cooking Valentine’s dinner at home, and a single gold solitaire pendant sits right in the wrap neckline.

Sheer black tights and black suede ballet flats are all it needs.

One fine gold pendant does more than a stack of jewelry ever will.

17. Bright Red Long-Sleeve Sheath Dress + Dark Navy Wool Coat

Long Sophia Coat (Dark Navy)

$450.00 | Dark navy that reads nearly black until it sits beside red.

Black is the expected partner for bright red, and navy is the better one. The sheath is knee-length with long sleeves and a defined waist, and a long dark navy wool coat goes over it for Valentine’s drinks at a cocktail bar.

Sheer navy tights and navy slingbacks make the leg one color.

Red and navy is the smartest combination on this list.

Dark cherry with caramel is the pairing that outlasts February. The ponte midi has a button front, long sleeves, pockets and fine navy piping, and a caramel wool wrap coat ties over it.

Chestnut riding boots ground the whole thing for a Valentine’s weekend lunch.

This is the outfit I’d still be wearing in March.

Red Is the Color Screens Get Most Wrong: How to Judge a Red Dress Before It Arrives

Red is the hardest color to buy from a photo. Cameras tend to overexpose saturated red, which flattens folds and texture, so a bright red dress often looks smoother and louder on a product page than it does in your hallway.

The deep shades fail in the other direction. Wine and dark cherry are often photographed so dark that they read almost black on a phone, then turn up clearly red in daylight.

So read the color name, look at every photo on the page and compare the flat shot with the one on the model.

When the dress arrives, judge it by a window at midday, next to the coat you plan to wear with it. Do that inside the return window, not the night before the party.

Start with the shade you’ll wear most, not the brightest one. A wine or burgundy dress goes to the office, the theatre and dinner, and a bright red one is easier than it looks once camel, navy or grey is beside it.

Buy the dress, then give it one good partner.

Everything else is probably already in your closet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color shoes go with a red dress in winter?

Black, navy, chocolate brown, chestnut and metallic gold or silver all work. I’d skip red shoes with a red bag, which tips the outfit into costume.

What color coat looks best over a red dress?

Ivory and camel make red look rich, navy and charcoal make it look sharp, and black is the safe classic. Pick the coat by how formal the occasion is, not by the shade of the dress.

Can I wear the same red dress for Christmas and Valentine’s Day?

Yes, and that is the point of this list. Change the partner: velvet, pearls and metallics for December, then a plain wool coat and fine gold jewelry in February.

Is a sleeveless red dress wearable in winter?

Yes, if the layer is part of the plan. The silk tank dress here goes under a velvet blazer, and the satin slip goes under a wool coat with a fine cardigan for indoors.
