The best mother of the groom winter wedding outfits start with fabric, not with a coat thrown over a summer dress. Velvet, taffeta, cashmere and jacquard look richer than anything the warm months offer.
I built these 15 looks so the warmth is part of the outfit. Sleeves, capes, wool coats and tall boots are all chosen to be seen.
Every look sits in a deep winter color: emerald, burgundy, navy, teal, sapphire, chocolate and bronze.
You’ll find elegant mother of the groom outfits for a cold weather wedding at every dress code, from a registry office to black tie. If a dress is your first choice, I also have a shorter edit of long-sleeve mother of the groom dresses for fall and winter.
1. Emerald Velvet Midi Dress + Black Suede Block-Heel Pumps

Shop the Look
Honor Column Velvet Midi Dress (Emerald Night)
$220.00 | Full-length sleeves and a mid-calf hem mean this emerald velvet column needs no jacket once you are indoors.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Black Suede)
$165.00 | Suede next to velvet keeps the textures soft, and the covered block heel is steady for a long reception.
Black Satin Gabrielle Clutch
$98.00 | An envelope shape in black satin with a braided tassel, small enough to hold through the photographs.
Velvet with a full sleeve is the one dress on this list that needs no second layer indoors. Boden’s emerald column falls to mid-calf with a tie belt and buttons down the front.
Black suede pumps and a black satin clutch keep everything around it quiet.
Deep green velvet does more for you in winter light than any amount of sparkle.
2. Burgundy Sheath Dress + Wine Wool Coat

Shop the Look
Ginevra Belted Long Sleeve Sheath (Arresting Burgundy)
$138.00 | Lined through the body and belted at the waist, so the shape is there before the coat goes on.
Aylesford Wool Coat (Vino)
$320.00 | Boden cuts this wool-rich coat slim with a collar, and the Vino shade sits right beside the burgundy dress.
Gemmha Pointy Toe Pumps (Burgundy Suede)
$109.00 | Real burgundy suede with no hardware is what lets the tonal look run all the way to the floor.
Tonal burgundy is what makes this read as one decision instead of a dress with a coat thrown over it. The knee-length sheath has long sleeves and its own belt.
The wine wool coat is cut slim with a collar and stops on the thigh, so the dress shows beneath it. Burgundy suede pumps finish the column.
Three shades of one red look more expensive than any contrast you could add.
3. Navy Silk Maxi Skirt + Navy Cashmere Crewneck

Shop the Look
100% Washable Silk Maxi Skirt (Navy)
$80.00 | Pure mulberry silk cut on the bias with a hidden elastic waist, which is far kinder at a seated dinner than a fixed waistband.
Midnight Navy Cashmere Elizabeth Crewneck
$178.00 | A slim cashmere crew with a ribbed hem tucks flat, where a chunkier knit would bunch at the waist.
Ebel Mid Heel Pump (Navy Leather)
$99.00 | You can stand for hours in these: navy leather, a rounded toe, a cushioned insole and a sturdy mid block heel.
A silk skirt and a cashmere sweater is the dinner outfit I’d pick over most dresses. Both pieces are navy, the bias-cut skirt runs to the ankle, and the slim crewneck tucks in cleanly.
The silk is light, so the cashmere and a pair of tights underneath do the warming. Navy leather block heels keep the line unbroken.
Head-to-toe navy is the calmest way to look rich in a candlelit room.
4. Teal Velvet Blazer + Matching Velvet Trousers

Shop the Look
Longline Velvet Button Blazer (Teal Ocean)
$320.00 | Thigh-length and single-breasted with a contrast collar detail, this is the piece that makes the suit feel like eveningwear.
Fitzrovia Velvet Pants (Teal Ocean)
$220.00 | Made in the same Teal Ocean velvet as the blazer, with a natural waist and a column leg that runs full length.
Midnight Navy Cashmere Sleeveless Ava Shell
$158.00 | Sleeveless cashmere with rib-knit trim adds warmth under velvet without adding bulk in the sleeves.
Cara Dress Pumps (Black Leather)
$69.99 | Because a velvet suit wants a quiet shoe, I kept this to plain black leather on a block heel.
Skip the dress entirely if a suit is what you feel most like yourself in. This one is matching deep teal velvet: a longline single-breasted blazer that falls on the thigh over full-length column trousers.
A sleeveless navy cashmere shell sits underneath, with black leather block-heel pumps. I have more pantsuit looks for the mother of the groom if this is your direction.
A matching velvet suit is the most confident thing you can wear to a city wedding.
5. Forest Taffeta Gown + Long Black Wool Coat

Shop the Look
Taffeta Shirt Waist Gown (Forest)
$610.00 | Teri Jon designs this floor-length taffeta gown with mothers of the bride and groom in mind, down to the removable sash and side pockets.
Wool Cashmere Tailored Long Coat (Black)
$200.00 | Tailored through the waist in a wool-cashmere blend, and long enough to look intentional over a gown.
Ebel Mid Heel Pump (Black Suede)
$99.00 | Hidden under the hem, so I chose for comfort: soft suede, a cushioned insole and a mid block heel.
Black tie in deep winter calls for a gown with real sleeves, and taffeta holds its shape in a way soft fabrics never do. This forest green shirt-waist gown is floor length with a collar, hidden buttons, pockets and a sash.
Over it goes a long black wool-cashmere coat with a tailored waist. Black suede block heels sit hidden under the hem.
A gown with pockets is a small luxury you will be grateful for by the third hour.
6. Chocolate Satin Maxi Dress + Cashmere Shawl

Shop the Look
Chocolate Brown Satin Emiliana Maxi Dress
$248.00 | Wide bell sleeves and a removable tie belt give this chocolate satin maxi shape and coverage in one piece.
Wheat Cashmere Blanket Scarf
$198.00 | Oversized enough to wear as a shawl or a shrug, in a warm wheat shade that lifts the brown.
Tamant Block Heel Dress Pumps (Dark Brown Suede)
$69.99 | Matched closely to the dress, this suede block heel keeps the brown unbroken to the floor.
Chocolate brown satin is the most underrated color at a winter wedding. The dress is a V-neck maxi to the ankle with wide bell sleeves and a tie belt, so you are covered from shoulder to shoe.
A wheat cashmere blanket scarf goes around the shoulders as the warm layer. Dark brown suede block heels match the dress.
Brown reads softer than black in afternoon light, and far less expected.
7. Navy Wide-Leg Jumpsuit + Black Velvet Jacket

Shop the Look
Bell Sleeve Crepe Surplice Jumpsuit (Navy Sateen)
$199.00 | Three-quarter bell sleeves layered with organza are the detail that takes this wrap-front jumpsuit to wedding level.
Velvet Waisted Jacket (Black)
$320.00 | Pleats nip the waist and a peplum finishes the hem, so it shapes a wide-leg jumpsuit instead of hiding it.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Black Leather)
$165.00 | Smooth black leather this time, a cleaner finish against crepe than suede would be.
A jumpsuit is the modern answer when a dress feels too predictable. This navy one has a wrap front, full-length wide legs and three-quarter bell sleeves finished with a layer of organza.
The black velvet jacket is fitted, nipped at the waist with a peplum, and ends between the waist and hip. Black leather block-heel pumps finish it.
Short jacket, long leg: that proportion flatters almost everyone.
8. Cranberry Jacquard Dress + Charcoal Wool Coat

Shop the Look
Cranberry Jacquard Adelaide Dress
$298.00 | Lined, pocketed and gathered at the waist, with a jacquard weave that does the decorating for you.
Italian Wool Classic Single-Breasted Coat (Heather Charcoal)
$175.00 | Italian melton wool in a single-breasted cut with one button is about as clean as a coat gets.
Arlene Pointy Toe Pumps (Black Leather)
$105.00 | Kitten heels in black leather sit neatly with opaque tights and never fight a full skirt.
Jacquard already looks festive, which is exactly why this dress needs nothing sparkly. It is a cranberry midi with a collared V-neck, a gathered waist, a full skirt and pockets.
The sleeves are short, so the charcoal wool coat does the warming: single-breasted, below the knee, with a notched lapel. Black kitten-heel pumps and opaque tights carry it through December.
Cranberry against charcoal is the holiday palette done by a grown-up.
9. Green Crepe Maxi Skirt + Navy Cashmere Turtleneck + Wool Cape

Shop the Look
Verdant Green Crepe Colbert Maxi Skirt
$198.00 | Relaxed and flowing in a deep bottle green, with a side zip that keeps the waist smooth under a tucked knit.
Midnight Navy Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198.00 | The rolled neck and ribbed cuffs in pure cashmere replace the scarf you would otherwise need.
The Cape (Midnight Navy)
$550.00 | Italian virgin wool with sculpted shoulders, front clasps and four pockets: outerwear that looks like part of the occasion.
Alfie Block Heel Leather Ankle Bootie (Black Leather)
$199.00 | Pointed toe, low block heel and a side zip, so they look dressy and still cope with a gravel path.
Separates are the smartest choice for a lodge or barn wedding. A flowing deep green crepe maxi skirt takes a tucked-in navy cashmere turtleneck, and the cashmere does the warming before any outerwear goes on.
The navy wool cape is structured, with sculpted shoulders, clasps at the front and slits for your arms. Black leather ankle booties with a low block heel handle the gravel.
A cape photographs better than any coat, and I will not be argued out of that.
10. Deep Blue Lace Dress + Belted Camel Wrap Coat

Shop the Look
Cassie Lace Tea Dress (Deep Aurora Blue)
$360.00 | Covered buttons, a ruffled neckline and cuffs you can push up make this lace dress feel special without a single embellishment.
100% Mongolian Cashmere Double-Faced Wrap Coat (Camel)
$500.00 | Double-faced Mongolian cashmere with a notched lapel and a removable tie belt: this is the piece I’d keep wearing for years.
Zala Block Heel Pointy Toe Pump (Navy Suede)
$165.00 | Navy suede picks up the blue of the lace far better than black would.
Lace with full sleeves is the classic choice, and it looks freshest in a deep blue with a teal cast instead of the usual navy. Boden’s tea dress falls to the ankle with an empire waist, a ruffled neckline and long cuffed sleeves.
The camel cashmere wrap coat belts closed and ends below the knee, so the lace hem shows underneath. Navy suede block-heel pumps tie back to the dress.
Camel over deep blue is the richest color pairing winter has.
11. Black Velvet Top + Silk Trousers + Emerald Velvet Blazer

Shop the Look
Lace Trim Velvet Top (Black)
$89.00 | Lace at the neck and cuffs is just enough detail to show when the blazer comes off.
100% Washable Silk Drawstring Wide Leg Pants (Black)
$92.00 | Silk satin in a fluid wide leg, with a drawstring waist that disappears under the untucked top.
Stamford Velvet Blazer (Midnight Emerald)
$260.00 | Semi-fitted with a revere collar and welt pockets, in a solid deep green that glows next to black.
Black velvet and black silk would be enough for dinner, but the emerald blazer is what makes it a wedding outfit. The velvet top is slim with lace trim at the neck and cuffs, worn over fluid wide-leg silk trousers.
On top goes a hip-length velvet blazer in solid deep emerald, single-breasted and semi-fitted.
One jewel-toned layer over black is all the color an evening reception needs.
12. Midnight Sequin Gown + Faux Fur Cover-Up

Shop the Look
Midnight Sequin Long Sleeve Blouson Evening Gown
$358.00 | Allover sequins on mesh with a fully lined skirt, and the high neckline keeps all that shine dignified.
Short Sleeve Faux Fur Coverup Jacket (Dark Brown)
$149.00 | Plush faux fur with a high collar and above-the-elbow sleeves, held by one clasp so it stays put through the toasts.
Sequins belong at a New Year’s Eve wedding, and long sleeves keep them elegant. The midnight gown is floor length with a softly bloused bodice, a high illusion neckline and sheer long sleeves.
A dark brown faux fur cover-up sits across the shoulders and upper arms, fastening with a single clasp at the neck.
Brown fur over midnight blue looks far more considered than black on black.
13. Berry Ribbed Knit Dress + Charcoal Coat + Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Paula Ribbed Crew Dress (Deep Wisteria, Navy)
$249.00 | Ribbed in a wool-cotton blend with concealed buttons and contrast navy trim, it has more structure than most knit dresses.
Wool Cashmere Blazer Coat (Heather Charcoal)
$200.00 | Notched lapels and a single button give this wool-cashmere coat the line of a long blazer.
Caddy Knee High Boots (Black Leather)
$149.99 | Slim leather shafts, a square toe and a two-inch kitten heel make these the tall boots that pass at a wedding.
A knit dress at a wedding sounds casual until you see it under a tailored coat with tall boots. This ribbed one is a berry mauve with navy trim, a crew neck, long sleeves and a tie belt, and it falls to mid-calf.
The charcoal wool-cashmere coat is single-breasted and about knee length. Black leather knee-high boots close the gap under the hem.
Nothing on this list is more comfortable from a morning ceremony to the last cup of tea.
14. Sapphire Taffeta Shirt Dress + Black Velvet Bolero

Shop the Look
3/4 Sleeve Belted Taffeta Shirt Dress (Sapphire)
$400.00 | Elbow sleeves, a collar and a pleated skirt in sapphire taffeta: traditional in the best sense.
Velvet Cropped Bolero (Black)
$430.00 | Open at the front and cropped short, it adds velvet at the shoulders, and the dress stands up fine without it.
Calynna Leather Kitten Heel Pump (Black Leather)
$140.00 | For a long service, a pointed black leather pump on a mid kitten heel is the sensible kind of elegant.
Taffeta has the crispness a formal church wedding asks for. The sapphire shirt dress falls just below the knee with a collar, a sash, a pleated A-line skirt and sleeves to the elbow.
A cropped black velvet bolero with short sleeves goes over the shoulders, and black leather kitten heels keep it traditional. If you like a topper, I’ve covered more ways to layer a jacket over a mother of the groom dress.
Sapphire and black is formal without being severe.
15. Bronze Embellished Gown + Wool Cape

Shop the Look
Brown Embellished Long Sleeve High Neck Evening Gown (Bronze)
$448.00 | Bronze beading and sequins cover this fully lined gown from its high round neckline to the floor.
The Cape (Mink)
$550.00 | Mink is a soft taupe-brown that warms up bronze, and the arm slits let you hold a glass with the cape still on.
Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Dark Brown Leather)
$229.00 | Structured dark brown leather with a stacked block heel, worn unseen under the gown for the snow.
A destination wedding in the snow is the one place to go fully glamorous. The bronze gown is covered in beading and sequins, with a high round neckline, sheer long sleeves and a floor-length hem.
Over it goes a structured wool cape in mink, a mid taupe-brown, with slits for your arms. Dark brown leather knee-high boots with a stacked block heel hide under the hem.
Proper boots under a gown is the best-kept secret of winter dressing.

Shop the BlueprintWhere the Corsage Goes When Your Dress Is Velvet, Sequins or Lace
Most mothers of the groom are handed a corsage on the morning of the wedding, and winter fabrics are the worst possible place to pin one.
A pin crushes velvet pile and can leave a mark that stays. Taffeta and satin show pinholes, and a pin can snag beaded mesh or lace.
Ask the florist for a wrist corsage, or pin the flowers to your clutch.
A magnetic backing is another option on a jacket or coat lapel, though anyone with a pacemaker should skip magnets. Settle it with the florist a few weeks ahead, so nobody arrives at your shoulder with a pin on the day.
Start with the fabric you already love wearing, then choose the layer that goes over it. In winter the coat, cape or jacket is half the outfit, so it deserves as much thought as the dress.
Buy the outer layer first if you are unsure, because you will wear it long after the wedding.
Once the wedding day is settled, the night before needs its own plan. I have rehearsal dinner outfits for the mother of the groom ready for that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the mother of the groom wear black to a winter wedding?
Yes, for an evening or black-tie wedding. I’d break it with one deep color, as in the black velvet and emerald blazer look, so it reads festive instead of somber.
What are the best winter mother of the groom dresses with sleeves?
Velvet, lace and taffeta, in long or elbow-length sleeves. Looks 1, 10 and 14 are the three I’d try on first.
Should I coordinate with the mother of the bride?
Coordinate, don’t match. Ask what color she is wearing, then choose a different deep shade at a similar level of formality.
What shoes work for a snowy or outdoor winter ceremony?
Block heels or boots. Under a floor-length gown, knee-high boots are invisible and far warmer than pumps.
Do I need a coat if the reception is indoors?
Yes. You still have the arrival, the photographs and the walk between venues, so pick a coat or cape you are happy to be photographed in.
