A good sequin skirt outfit has exactly one shiny thing in it, and it’s the skirt.
That’s the whole rule. Everything else stays matte: cashmere, poplin, wool, leather, denim, or silk with a low sheen at most.
I built these twelve looks around three real skirts, and they are not the same length. The silver one is a midi that ends below the knee, the black one is an ankle-length maxi, and the pale champagne one stops at the knee.
Length changes more than colour does, so check where each hem lands before you copy a look.
A knee-length hem shows your tights and your whole shoe, so both have to be chosen on purpose. A maxi hides nearly everything beneath it, which makes it the warmest of the three and the most forgiving.

Grey on silver is the pairing that makes sequins look like texture instead of a party trick. A heather grey cashmere turtleneck tucked into the silver midi keeps everything in one cool tonal family, so the large paillette-style sequins are the only shine.
Sheer black tights and a black leather block-heel pump ground the hem, which ends below the knee.
Tonal dressing is the most expensive-looking thing you can do with sparkle.
Styling tip: I tuck the turtleneck all the way in and smooth it flat. A bunched knit at the waist is what makes a sequin skirt look bulky.

White poplin is what makes sequins acceptable at four in the afternoon. Tuck the front of a slightly oversized shirt into the black sequin maxi and the whole thing reads as tailoring with a secret.
This skirt is a pull-on slip that falls to the ankle, so sheer black tights barely show and a pointed kitten slingback sits right under the hem.
Black and white is never the wrong answer at an office party.
Styling tip: Roll the sleeves once and leave the collar open by one button. Fully buttoned and pressed, I think it starts to look like a uniform.

Cable knit over sequins is the most comfortable way to be dressed up, and it lasts through three courses. This one is a cashmere cable V-neck in a soft neutral taupe, a mid to light weight rather than a heavy one, so it drapes over the champagne skirt’s waistband instead of swamping it.
The skirt ends at the knee, which leaves room for natural suede ankle boots with a pointed toe and a block heel.
Warm neutrals with pale champagne look calm, and calm is the point on Christmas Day.
Styling tip: My rule with a slouchy knit: front-tuck only the centre few inches. You get a waist and keep the ease everywhere else.

Tailoring against sparkle is the most grown-up way to do midnight. A cropped cream tuxedo jacket, buttoned, stops at the waist, and that is exactly why it works over an ankle-length column of black sequins.
Underneath, a plain black camisole barely shows at the neckline. Pointed black pumps and sheer black tights finish it.

A long jacket over a long skirt would bury you, so cropped is correct.
Styling tip: I wear the jacket closed and treat it as the top. Left open, it’s just a blazer over a camisole.

White leather sneakers with a gum sole finish it, and that strip of tan rubber warms up all the grey and silver.
Sequins in daylight look best when nothing else is trying.
Styling tip: Let the sweatshirt sit over the waistband at the hip. Tucking fleece into sequins looks fussy, and I’ve never seen it work.
