Is Toteme Worth It?

I have been curious about Toteme for years, and this Toteme review is my attempt to answer the question every minimalist brand raises. Is it substance or hype?

When I walked into the Paris store, it felt quiet and uncluttered, with each hanger carrying something that could hold its own. That restraint gave me confidence before I tried anything on.

So is Toteme worth it? Coats, yes. Knitwear and trousers, mostly. Accessories and shoes are where I get more careful.

Below are 11 pieces, ordered from the strongest buys to the ones I would think twice about. Each one gets a plain verdict.

Toteme’s tailoring runs relaxed, so the pieces settle once you see them in motion.

1. Signature doublé coat (hazel)

When I tried Toteme’s signature wool coat in Paris, I assumed the proportions would swallow me. Belted, it looked balanced, and that is the reason I trust the brand’s outerwear.

This doublé version stretches the idea with a longer line and extra-long sleeves. Verdict: worth it, if you are buying one coat for years.

Signature doublé coat (hazel)

Signature doublé coat (hazel) ($1,680, TOTEME). Double-faced wool-cashmere, hand-finished, in an elongated oversized shape that drapes rather than stiffens.

Styling tip: Push the extra-long sleeves back once so a cuff shows at the wrist. It keeps the oversized shape looking deliberate instead of borrowed.

2. Classic tailored coat (black)

This one starts from a classic Crombie coat, then loosens it with turned-up lapels and rolled sleeves. The windowpane check lining peeks out as a small surprise.

I have not worn this exact coat, so I am judging the design. Verdict: worth it with caveats, since the page does not spell out the fabric composition.

Classic tailored coat (black)

Classic tailored coat (black) ($1,450, TOTEME). An oversized Crombie reworked with rolled sleeves and a windowpane lining, black and easy to repeat all winter.

Styling tip: Wear it open over a cashmere knit and straight trousers. The vertical line of the open front is what makes the oversized cut look tailored.

3. Classic cashmere crew knit (hazel)

A cashmere crew sounds like the safest purchase on this list, and it is, but only when the cashmere is genuinely soft and dense. This one is modeled on a classic men’s sweater, which explains the relaxed shoulders.

My own Toteme knit is the striped cotton-wool one, and knitwear is where I say choose carefully. Verdict: worth it, as long as you wear it hard.

Classic cashmere crew knit (hazel)

Classic cashmere crew knit (hazel) ($750, TOTEME). Extra-soft cashmere in tan with a relaxed crew neck that layers under any coat on this list.

Styling tip: Tuck only the front hem into your waistband. A partial tuck defines the waist without fighting the relaxed cut.

4. Striped poplin shirt (blue/white)

Toteme poplin shirts hold their shape after a full day of wear, which is rare, and that is why I rate them. Here the fabric is crisp cotton in a slim, elongated cut with fine blue and white stripes.

The close fit is the opposite of most of the brand, so size with that in mind. Verdict: worth it, especially at the lower end of the range.

Striped poplin shirt (blue/white) ($460, TOTEME). Crisp cotton poplin in a slim, elongated shape with fine blue and white stripes.

Styling tip: Pair it with relaxed black trousers. A slim top over a wide leg is the proportion that makes both pieces look intentional.

5. Double-pleat tailored trousers (black)

I wore Toteme black trousers on a trip last fall, with a cream sweater and a trench, and never felt styled, just comfortable. That is the whole appeal.

These are cut from a structured suiting canvas with a relaxed double pleat. Verdict: buy, the safest tailoring purchase here.

Double-pleat tailored trousers (black)

Double-pleat tailored trousers (black) ($590, TOTEME). Structured suiting fabric and a relaxed double-pleat leg that drops cleanly over a loafer.

Styling tip: Hem them to just skim the top of your shoe. The pleats fall straight only if the hem is not fighting them.

6. Twisted seam denim (worn blue)

Denim is the hardest category for a splurge brand, because jeans age by being worn. The twisted side seams are the signature here, and they are what you are paying extra for.

The cut is relaxed, straight-tapered and ankle length, in a mid wash. Verdict: worth it with caveats, but only if the side-seam detail is what draws you.

Twisted seam denim (worn blue)

Twisted seam denim (worn blue) ($420, TOTEME). A mid-wash, ankle-length straight-tapered jean with directional twisted side seams that add movement.

Styling tip: Keep everything else plain. With a tee and a coat, the twisted seam is the one detail people notice.

7. Toteme Wool blazer (grey)

Wearing a Toteme cream blouse under a navy blazer once earned me a friend’s question about where it came from, because the drape looked right. A blazer like this grey one does the same job.

It is 100% wool with an oversized shoulder and fringed lapel edges. It was on markdown and final sale when I wrote this, so check the status before you fall for it. Verdict: worth it at the reduced price.

Toteme Wool blazer (grey)

Toteme Wool blazer (grey) ($735, Mytheresa). Pale grey melange wool, single-breasted with flap pockets and fringed lapel edges.

Styling tip: Push the sleeves up once and leave it open. The oversized shoulder needs room to hang, not buttoning.

8. Toteme Oversized cotton jersey T-shirt (white)

At $104, this is the cheapest way into the brand, and a plain tee tells you a lot about a label. It is 100% cotton jersey, comfortably oversized, with a twisted hem as the only flourish.

It was final sale at time of writing, so sizes can vanish. Verdict: worth it as an entry point.

Toteme Oversized cotton jersey T-shirt (white)

Toteme Oversized cotton jersey T-shirt (white) ($104, Mytheresa). Oversized cotton jersey in muted white with a round neck and a uniquely twisted hem.

Styling tip: Tuck it loosely under the blazer. The heavier jersey keeps a clean line where thin tees would cling.

9. Signature monogram silk scarf (crème)

This is the brand’s best-known accessory, and I find accessories harder to rationalize when similar scarves exist from other heritage labels at similar prices. At $220 it is Toteme’s low-price entry.

The silk is featherlight and the monogram sits in the middle of a 57 x 57 cm square. Verdict: be careful, it is a want more than a need.

Signature monogram silk scarf (crème)

Signature monogram silk scarf (crème) ($220, TOTEME). A featherlight silk square in crème with the monogram printed in the center.

Styling tip: Fold it into a triangle and knot it at the throat. Folded small, the monogram is subtle rather than logo-first.

10. Roam leather tote (black)

The Roam is a soft unstructured tote with precise creases for a geometric drape. It photographs beautifully.

The detail I would weigh at $1,290 is that the leather is bonded, not full-grain. Verdict: be careful, the price is hard to justify against that.

Roam leather tote (black)

Roam leather tote (black) ($1,290, TOTEME). A soft, creased Italian tote in smooth bonded black leather, unstructured by design.

Styling tip: Carry it half full. An overfilled tote loses the drape that you are paying for.

11. Slip naplack ballerinas (black)

I find Toteme shoes minimal but not distinct enough to justify the price. These glossy naplack ballerinas are well made in Italy, but the design is not doing anything a cheaper flat cannot.

They are shaped to the curve of the foot with a cushioned sole. Verdict: be careful, and compare before buying.

Slip naplack ballerinas (black)

Slip naplack ballerinas (black) ($590, TOTEME). Glossed naplack leather in black, Italian-made, with a cushioned flexible sole.

Styling tip: Wear them with an ankle-length hem, like the denim above. Showing the ankle keeps a flat looking sharp.

Toteme pieces are designed to work together, so the trousers match the proportions of the knits and the coats layer over everything. Over time, getting dressed just feels easier.

That is worth paying for in coats, tailoring and knits. It is harder to justify on scarves, bags and shoes.

Start with one coat or one pair of trousers, then build outward.

Styling tip: Choose the neutral that matches your coat first, then buy the trousers and knit to sit in the same color family.

The clothes do not announce themselves, and that is what makes them last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Toteme run true to size?

It runs relaxed and oversized, especially the coats and knits, so most people can stay with their usual size. The striped poplin shirt is the exception, since it is cut slim with a close fit.

Is Toteme worth the price?

For coats, tailoring and cashmere, yes, because the fabric and cut justify it. For the scarf, tote and ballerinas, I would compare alternatives first.

How does Toteme compare to The Row, Massimo Dutti and Sezane?

It is more approachable than The Row in cost and attitude. It is steeper than Massimo Dutti but more consistent in vision, and more grown up than Sezane.

How should I care for the cashmere and wool pieces?

Follow the care label, and generally lay knits flat to dry and brush wool coats after wearing. Store them folded or on wide hangers so the shoulders keep their shape.

Should I worry about final-sale listings?

Yes. The grey blazer and white tee were marked down and final sale at time of writing, so check sizing carefully because there are no returns.
