Italian old money winter outfits come down to one habit: pick a color and carry it from coat to shoe.
In Milan, the woman who does this best has a name, the sciura. It is local shorthand for the well-dressed lady of a certain standing, the one in the camel coat who never looks like she tried.
Her formula is short. A proper coat, a fine knit, tailored trousers or a skirt with tall boots, and plain leather or suede shoes with no hardware on them.
Italian winter style for women is tonal before it is anything else: camel on camel, grey on grey, navy, chocolate, with green and burgundy as the only accents.
I built these 17 looks that way, from pieces you can buy right now. Italian here describes the style, not the label, and if you want the year-round version I’ve written up the pieces an Italian old money wardrobe is built on.
1. Camel Topcoat + Camel Cashmere Turtleneck + Camel Wool Trousers + Dark Brown Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Chiara Topcoat in Italian Double Face (Dark Camel)
$450 | Three buttons, notch lapels and a hem below the knee, in a wool blend with a touch of cashmere designed by an Italian mill.
Camel Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198 | True mid camel in pure cashmere, with a rolled neck that sits neatly inside a coat collar.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Camel Beige)
$198 | Cut ultra high and straight, in lightweight wool cloth from an Italian mill, so the leg falls clean to the shoe.
Manner Casual Leather Loafers (Dark Brown Suede)
$99 | Plain almond toe, slim sole, no metal anywhere: exactly what a suede penny loafer should be.
Three camel pieces only work when they are honestly the same camel, and these are: a single-breasted topcoat that hits below the knee, a cashmere turtleneck and straight wool trousers.
The coat cloth was designed by an Italian mill and the trouser cloth comes from another. Dark brown suede penny loafers are the only second color, and I’ve rounded up more old money suede loafers if you want options.
One color from collar to hem will always look more expensive than three good ones.
2. Charcoal Wool Coat + Light Grey Cashmere Crewneck + Grey Flannel Trousers + Black Penny Loafers

Shop the Look
Italian Wool Classic Single-Breasted Coat (Heather Charcoal)
$175 | Made in Italy from Italian melton wool, with one button and a notched lapel. This is the coat I’d point a friend to first.
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Cement)
$98 | Dove grey cashmere in a classic crewneck that ends at the hip, the lightest step in the grey scale.
Hudson Pant in Wool Flannel (Heather Grey)
$195 | Pure wool flannel with a wide straight leg and a drawstring waist you’ll be grateful for by mid-afternoon.
Women’s Whitney Weejuns Penny Loafer (Black)
$195 | Polished black leather with beefroll stitching and nothing shiny attached. A proper classic.
Grey on grey needs a visible step between each piece, light to dark as it moves outward. Here that is a dove grey cashmere crewneck, heather grey wool flannel trousers and a charcoal coat on top.
This coat is the one piece in the whole article that is actually made in Italy, in Italian melton wool, and black penny loafers finish it.
Grey flannel is the most Milanese fabric I can think of, and it does not need a pressed crease to prove it.
3. Moss Green Wool Coat + Navy Cashmere Crewneck + Mid Grey Trousers + Dark Brown Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Cotswold Wool Coat (Hunter Green)
$380 | Muted moss green in a wool blend, single-breasted with a small structured collar and a knee-length hem.
Cashmere Slim Crew Sweater (Navy)
$148 | Slim, fine-gauge and dark navy, so it layers under a fitted coat without adding bulk.
Flannel Easy Pants (08 Dark Gray)
$39.90 | Labeled dark gray but it reads mid grey, with a brushed flannel look and an easy pull-on waist.
Women’s Avery Ankle Boot (Dark Choco)
$240 | A stacked block heel and moccasin stitching on a soft square toe give this dark chocolate boot some character.
A green coat is the Milanese answer to a black one, and the green has to be muted. This is a mid moss, cut single-breasted to the knee with a small structured collar.
Underneath, a slim navy cashmere crewneck, mid grey flannel-look trousers and dark chocolate ankle boots on a stacked block heel keep everything else quiet.
Navy and grey under green is what I would happily wear every Saturday of the winter.
4. Navy Quilted Jacket + Camel Cashmere Turtleneck + Stone Corduroy Trousers + Brown Suede Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Navy Annandale Quilted Jacket
$220 | Navy diamond quilting, a dark corduroy collar and a snap front, cut to the hip. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Camel Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198 | Here the camel cashmere does a different job: it is the warm note between navy and stone.
Belgravia Cord Pants (Latte)
$180 | High-waisted corduroy in pale stone, with a subtle flare that lengthens the leg under a short jacket.
Maribu Ankle Leather Booties (Brown Suede)
$104.30 | Brown suede on a low block heel, with a softly pointed toe, a plain shaft and no hardware.
The quilted jacket is the one casual layer this style fully accepts, and it should be navy with a corduroy collar. Snap it closed over a camel cashmere turtleneck so the knit shows only at the neck.
Pale stone corduroy trousers with a subtle flare and brown suede ankle boots lighten the bottom half.
This is out-of-town dressing that still looks like you own an iron.
5. Chocolate Stand-Collar Topcoat + Camel Cashmere Turtleneck + Chocolate Wool Trousers + Dark Brown Leather Booties

Shop the Look
Italian Wool-Blend Top Coat (Ganache Brown)
$498 | Long, relaxed and deep chocolate, with a stand collar and a heavier wool blend from an Italian mill. Fully lined, too.
Camel Cashmere Evelyn Turtleneck
$198 | Against all that chocolate, this camel turtleneck is the lift at the neck that keeps brown from going flat.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Ganache Brown)
$198 | Same deep brown as the coat, flat-fronted and straight, in lightweight wool cloth from an Italian mill.
Francy Kitten Heel Leather Bootie (Dark Brown Leather)
$189 | Real leather, a sharp pointed toe and a low flared kitten heel: the dressiest boot in the article.
Chocolate is richer than black and far less common, which is exactly the point. A long, relaxed topcoat with a stand collar and a button front goes over straight wool trousers in the same deep brown.
Both cloths come from Italian mills, with a camel cashmere turtleneck at the neck and pointed dark brown leather booties on a kitten heel at the hem.
I would take this over a black coat for lunch every single time.
6. Long Navy Coat + Navy Cashmere Turtleneck + Navy Pleated Midi Skirt + Black Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Aylesford Longline Coat (Navy)
$420 | Designed to fall below the knee, with a collar, chunky buttons and welt pockets. Long enough to cover a midi.
Super Fine Cashmere Classic Turtleneck Sweater (Bright Navy)
$198 | Very fine cashmere with a close fit that tucks flat into a waistband. It reads darker than its Bright Navy name.
Navy Pleated Dixon Midi Skirt
$148 | Knife pleats and a flat elastic waistband, ending below the knee where tall boots take over.
Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Black Leather)
$229 | Smooth real leather with a plain structured shaft and a high stacked block heel, and not one piece of hardware.
When a coat is long, it should cover the skirt completely. This navy tailored one falls below the knee and hides a knife-pleated navy midi, with a fine cashmere turtleneck tucked in at the waist.
Black leather knee boots on a high block heel meet the hem, so there is no gap of leg anywhere.
Navy from collar to hem is softer than black and looks twice as deliberate.
7. Grey Herringbone Coat + Oatmeal Ribbed Knit Midi Dress + Dark Brown Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Cotswold Wool Coat (Grey Herringbone)
$460 | Black-and-white herringbone that reads mid grey from a few steps away, in a wool blend that stops at the knee.
Cotton Cashmere Ribbed Long Sleeve Crew Midi Dress (Heather Oatmeal)
$72 | Ribbed cotton and cashmere in pale oatmeal, long-sleeved, skimming the body and flaring a little at the mid-calf hem.
Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Dark Brown Leather)
$229 | Knee-high real leather in dark chocolate on a high block heel, which is what warms up a grey coat.
One pattern per outfit, and in this entire list it is this herringbone. The coat is single-breasted and stops at the knee, so the pale oatmeal ribbed knit dress shows below it at mid-calf.
Dark brown leather knee boots on a high block heel disappear under the dress hem and warm up all that grey.
Brown leather with grey is the mix I trust most in winter.
8. Camel Cashmere Wrap Coat + Navy Cashmere Polo + Grey Pleated Wide-Leg Trousers + Dark Brown Penny Loafers

Shop the Look
100% Mongolian Cashmere Double-Faced Wrap Coat (Camel)
$500 | Double-faced Mongolian cashmere with a removable tie belt and flap pockets. The one true investment on this page.
Mongolian Cashmere Polo Sweater (True Navy)
$79.90 | An open polo collar and a V placket in deep navy cashmere, relaxed enough to wear on its own indoors.
Doyer Pleated Trousers (Light Grey)
$230 | Two front pleats, a pressed crease and an adjustable button tab at the hem, in a light grey wool blend.
Women’s Whitney Weejuns Penny Loafer (Dark Choco)
$195 | Its dark brown leather has a faint red cast that looks wonderful beside camel.
Camel, navy and grey is the trio I think of first when I think of Milan, and none of the three should shout. A soft, light camel cashmere wrap coat ends above the knee, over a navy cashmere polo sweater.
Pleated wide-leg trousers in a light grey wool blend carry a sharp crease down to dark brown penny loafers.
A polo collar under a coat does everything a shirt does, with none of the ironing.
9. Cognac Suede-Look Jacket + Ivory Cashmere Turtleneck + Dark Indigo Straight Jeans + Brown Chelsea Boots

Shop the Look
Camel Hannah Suede Jacket
View at Tuckernuck (Anna Cate)
$298 | Suede-look rather than real suede, in a rust-cognac shade with a zip front, chest pockets and a tie belt.
Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater (01 Off White)
$99.90 | Warm ivory cashmere in a fine gauge. Uniqlo calls it off white, and it sits softly next to cognac.
The Way-High Jean 2.0 (Dark Indigo, 29.5″ Inseam)
$88 | Straight leg, clean hem, high rise, dark indigo. Everything I ask of a pair of jeans in winter.
Chelsea Pull-On Boots in Leather (Peppercorn)
$278 | Elastic side panels, a softly pointed toe and a slim low heel, in smooth mid brown leather.
Jeans are allowed exactly once here, and only this dark and this clean at the hem. A rust-cognac suede-look jacket, belted at the waist with a zip front, sits at the hip over an ivory cashmere turtleneck.
High-rise straight jeans in dark indigo stop at the ankle, right where mid brown leather Chelsea boots begin.
Dark denim with a fine turtleneck is as casual as this style ever needs to get.
10. Black Double-Breasted Coat + Ivory Silk Tie-Neck Blouse + Black Wool Trousers + Black Leather Booties

Shop the Look
Gaia Double-Breasted Coat (Black)
$550 | Peak lapels and padded shoulders on an oversized wool-blend coat that drops nearly to the ankle. Dramatic in the right way.
Washable Stretch Silk Tie Neck Blouse (Ivory)
$89.90 | Washable mulberry silk with a little stretch and long ties you can knot loosely into a bow.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Black)
$198 | Black wool cloth from an Italian mill in a full-length straight leg, so it meets the boot with no gap.
Alfie Block Heel Leather Ankle Bootie (Black Leather)
$199 | Low block heel, pointed toe, plain black leather shaft. You can walk to the restaurant in these.
All black works for dinner only if something breaks it, and here that is a single block of ivory silk. The tie-neck blouse tucks into straight black wool trousers, under a double-breasted black coat with peak lapels that runs almost to the ankle.
Pointed black leather booties on a low block heel keep the line long without asking you to suffer for it.
Sharp shoulders and a soft bow at the neck: that is the whole evening formula.
11. Short Light Grey Wool Coat + Burgundy Cashmere Crewneck + Chocolate Wool Trousers + Dark Brown Penny Loafers

Shop the Look
Sophia Coat in Wool (Light Heather Grey)
$375 | Pale heather grey double-face wool, collarless with brown buttons and a boxy, short cut. The retailer notes it runs big.
The Boxy Crew in Cashmere (Heather Wine)
$178 | Boxy and slightly cropped in deep burgundy cashmere, which suits a high-rise trouser perfectly.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Ganache Brown)
$198 | Chocolate wool trousers twice in one article, because nothing else sits this well under burgundy.
Women’s Whitney Weejuns Penny Loafer (Dark Choco)
$195 | Worn here to match the trousers, so the brown runs unbroken from waist to toe.
Burgundy with chocolate is the pairing that makes people ask where you bought it. A boxy, slightly cropped burgundy cashmere crewneck sits over high-rise straight wool trousers in deep brown.
The coat is short and collarless, a pale heather grey double-breasted cut with brown buttons that echo the trousers and the dark brown penny loafers.
A pale coat is what stops two deep colors from feeling heavy.
12. Camel Short Jacket + Chocolate Cashmere Turtleneck + Chocolate Pleated Midi Skirt + Dark Brown Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Wool Cashmere Short Coat (Mocha Brown)
$175 | Quince labels the color mocha brown, but it photographs a camel tan. Boxy, collared and finished with pick stitching.
Super Fine Cashmere Classic Turtleneck Sweater (Rich Brown)
$198 | Dark chocolate cashmere, very fine and close-fitting, the piece that joins jacket to skirt.
Pleated Matte Midi Skirt (Coffee Bean Brown)
$60 | Sunburst pleats in a matte woven fabric that moves when you walk and falls to the low calf.
Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Dark Brown Leather)
$229 | Tall enough to vanish under the skirt hem, in the same dark chocolate as everything below the jacket.
Take away the camel jacket and this is three chocolate pieces in a row, which would be flat. The jacket is hip length and boxy with a classic collar, in a wool and cashmere blend.
It stops well above a chocolate pleated midi skirt that swings to the low calf, with a fine chocolate cashmere turtleneck and dark brown leather knee boots on a high block heel making one unbroken column underneath.
Short jacket, long skirt, tall boot: the proportions do more than the price tags ever will.
13. Navy Topcoat + Pale Blue Cotton Shirt + Camel Wool Trousers + Dark Brown Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Chiara Topcoat in Italian Double Face (Navy)
$450 | Clear mid navy in the same Italian-designed wool blend as the camel version, with three buttons and flap pockets.
Everyday Shirt in Silky Cotton (Light Blue)
$88 | Sky blue cotton with a proper collar and placket, cut in an oversized cocoon shape.
Ultra High-Rise Modern Straight Italian Lightweight Wool Pant (Camel Beige)
$198 | The camel trousers again, this time as the warm block between a blue shirt and a navy coat.
Manner Casual Leather Loafers (Dark Brown Suede)
$99 | Dark brown suede softens a navy and camel look in a way polished leather never quite does.
Italian menswear gave us this one: pale blue, navy and camel, and I think it looks better on women. The shirt is an easy, oversized silky cotton, tucked into high-rise straight camel wool trousers.
Over it goes a navy single-breasted topcoat that hits below the knee, with dark brown suede penny loafers at the other end.
Nothing here is tight, and that ease is what reads as confidence at a client lunch.
14. Chocolate Faux Fur Coat + Grey Cashmere Turtleneck + Grey Flannel Trousers + Black Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Faux Fur Long Coat (Coffee Bean Brown)
$134 | Dense faux fur in very dark chocolate with a small collar and a concealed front, ending about the knee.
Super Fine Cashmere Classic Turtleneck Sweater (Granite)
$198 | Mid heather grey with a faint warm cast, which is why it gets along so well with brown.
Hudson Pant in Wool Flannel (Heather Grey)
$195 | Wide, straight wool flannel that balances a plush coat better than any slim trouser would.
The City Boot (Black)
$278 | No lug, no fuss: smooth black leather, a low stacked heel, an inside zip and a slim sole.
On the coldest day the answer is brown over grey, never black over black. A dark chocolate faux fur coat with a small collar and a concealed front closes to about the knee.
Under it sit a heather grey cashmere turtleneck and wide straight wool flannel trousers in a deeper grey, with smooth black leather ankle boots on a low stacked heel.
Plush on the outside, fine and flat on the inside, is how you wear this much texture without looking bundled.
15. Short Navy Double-Breasted Coat + Pale Grey Cashmere Crewneck + Charcoal Cashmere Knit Skirt + Black Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Sophia Coat in Wool (Dark Navy)
$375 | Collarless and double-breasted in very dark navy double-face wool, boxy and cut to the hip.
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Cement)
$98 | Back again as the light layer between a dark coat and a darker skirt, this pale grey crewneck earns its repeat.
Charcoal Cashmere Maeve Midi Skirt
$248 | Cashmere knit that hugs the waist, then eases into an A-line down to the low calf.
Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Black Leather)
$229 | Height without a stiletto: the high block heel does the work under a midi skirt.
A knit skirt is the most underrated thing in a winter wardrobe. This one is charcoal cashmere, fitted at the waist and softly A-line to the low calf, with a light grey cashmere crewneck above it.
A dark navy collarless coat, double-breasted and boxy, ends at the hip so the whole skirt shows, and black leather knee boots on a high block heel close the gap.
Navy over two greys is quieter than black and far more interesting.
16. Camel Short Coat + Bottle Green Cashmere Turtleneck + Chocolate Corduroy Trousers + Brown Suede Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Stephanie Wool Coat (Camel)
$248 | Single-breasted with a pointed collar, in a warm camel with a soft brushed surface, ending at the upper thigh.
Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater (58 Dark Green)
$99.90 | Deep, cool green with a slight teal cast, in fine-gauge cashmere. The accent color of the whole look.
The Way-High Corduroy Pant (Coffee Bean)
$128 | Fine-wale corduroy in dark chocolate, high-rise and straight through the leg.
Maribu Ankle Leather Booties (Brown Suede)
$104.30 | Suede against corduroy is a texture match I never get tired of, and the heel is low enough for a full Saturday.
Almost nobody wears bottle green with chocolate, and it is the richest pairing on this list. A deep, cool green cashmere turtleneck goes with high-rise straight trousers in dark chocolate fine-wale corduroy.
The short camel coat has a classic pointed collar and ends at the upper thigh, and brown suede ankle boots keep the texture soft all the way down.
Camel is the coat color that makes every dark shade under it look deliberate.
17. Stone Long Coat + Oatmeal Cashmere Crewneck + Taupe Wide-Leg Trousers + Tan Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Wool Cashmere Tailored Long Coat (Melange Sand Dune)
$200 | Stone-greige melange in wool and cashmere, lightly shaped at the waist and long to the low calf.
Mongolian Cashmere Boxy Crewneck Sweater (Oatmeal)
$82 | Oatmeal heather cashmere with side vents and a relaxed fit that drapes over a high waistband.
Brickell Trousers (Taupe)
$267 | Flat front, pressed crease, very wide leg and a full break in a lightweight wool blend. These make the outfit.
Italian Suede Penny Loafer (Cognac)
$84 | Tan-cognac suede with a softly pointed toe, a slim flat sole and a plain penny strap.
Greige is harder than camel and worth the effort: a long stone coat lightly fitted at the waist, an oatmeal cashmere crewneck and taupe wide-leg trousers one step deeper, close in tone without matching.
The trousers break fully over tan-cognac suede penny loafers, the warmest note in the look. If the train is taking you further than Milan, I have a full set of European winter outfits to pack from.
For a travel day I want exactly this: soft, pale and still tailored.

Shop the BlueprintItalian Fabric, Designed in Italy, Made in Italy: Three Labels That Mean Three Different Things
Where a garment was sewn and where its cloth came from are two separate facts, and retailers describe them separately.
“Made in Italy” is a claim about the garment. “Fabric from an Italian mill” only tells you where the cloth came from.
In this list, exactly one piece is described by its retailer as made in Italy: the charcoal coat in look 2. The camel and navy topcoats use a cloth designed by an Italian mill, and the straight wool trousers and the chocolate topcoat use cloth from Italian mills, but those garments are listed as imported.
That is not a trick. Mill cloth is often where the quality you can feel actually lives: the weight, the drape, how the surface wears.
So read the product page for the exact wording before you pay extra for the word Italian. A look can be Milanese in every way that shows without a single Italian label inside it.
Start with the coat. Choose it in camel, navy, charcoal or chocolate, then buy one fine knit in the same family before you buy anything else.
Once two pieces match in tone, the rest of the outfit gets easy, because every other choice is just lighter or darker.
If you would rather buy a dozen pieces and rotate them all season, my old money winter capsule maps that out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What colors do Italian old money winter outfits use?
Camel, grey in several depths, navy and chocolate do most of the work, usually one family per outfit. Muted green and burgundy come in as accents, and black appears only once here, for dinner.
Do I need Italian brands to dress like this?
No. The look comes from color discipline, fine knits and clean tailoring, and most of these pieces are from American and British retailers. Only one coat in the list is actually made in Italy.
Can I wear jeans in a Milan-inspired winter outfit?
Yes, but keep them dark indigo, straight and clean at the hem, as in look 9. Pair them with a fine turtleneck and leather boots so the denim is the only casual piece.
What shoes work with Milan winter outfits?
Plain penny loafers in leather or suede, sleek ankle boots and smooth knee boots. Skip metal hardware, embossed finishes and chunky soles, which all pull the look away from understated.
