How to Style a Long Skirt in Winter

Knowing how to style a long skirt in winter comes down to one question most outfit posts skip: what’s happening under the hem.

A maxi covers more leg than any trouser, but only if the bottom is closed off with tights, socks or a boot shaft. Leave a gap and the wind finds it.

Every one of these long skirt winter outfits is built on three skirts I’d actually buy: Quince’s smooth black ponte maxi pencil skirt, Quince’s washable silk bias maxi in a deep oxblood, and Boden’s caramel-brown pleated cotton-twill maxi with a full button front.

Each skirt gets five looks, so you can see how far one good piece stretches, from a snowy park path to New Year’s Eve.

If you lean toward shorter hems, I’ve also covered ten elegant ways to style a midi skirt, but in January I’d take the extra length every time.

The rule underneath all fifteen: warm on top, closed at the bottom, and no bare skin between hem and shoe.

1. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Cream Cashmere Turtleneck

Editor’s Picks

Button Front Pleated Skirt (Raw Umber)

$73.99 | Deep inverted pleats and a button front running the full length, in a warm caramel brown that’s marked down to $73.99.

The Boxy Turtleneck in Cashmere (Canvas)

$218.00 | Grade-A cashmere cut boxy and slightly cropped, which is exactly why it half-tucks without a bulky bunch at the waist.

Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Dark Brown Leather)

Zetta Leather Knee High Boots (Dark Brown Leather)

View at Nine West

$229.00 | Dark chocolate leather with a clean shaft, a side zip and no hardware, so nothing shiny competes with the pleats.

Boxy beats fitted over pleats, because a little volume up top keeps a full skirt from swallowing you.

Everlane’s cream cashmere turtleneck ends right at the waistband, so a loose half-tuck is all it needs, and dark chocolate knee boots pull the caramel and cream together.

Caramel and cream is the most underrated winter color pairing there is.

Styling tip: I wear brown opaque tights under the skirt so the leg reads as one dark line straight into the boot. Between the thick cashmere collar and leather up to the knee, the only part of me that feels the cold is my face.

2. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Cashmere Crewneck

$148.00 | Fine-gauge cashmere, slim enough to tuck flat into silk without leaving a ridge at the waist.

Fay Ankle Boots (Black Leather)

Fay Ankle Boots (Black Leather)

View at Vagabond Shoemakers

$210 | Plain black leather on a stacked block heel, which makes icy curbs manageable in a dressier look.

Silk in January only works when the top is softer and duller than the skirt, and fine charcoal cashmere is exactly that.

Tucked into Quince’s oxblood bias maxi, the crew lets the silk handle the shine while black leather ankle boots keep it grounded for the walk to dinner.

Oxblood and charcoal look more expensive together than black ever does.

Styling tip: I tuck the sweater in fully so the bias cut can fall straight from the waistband. Black opaque tights go underneath, and a wool coat goes over everything for the walk there, because silk on its own holds no heat.

3. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Cropped Cable Cardigan

$99.00 | Low-profile black leather with no hardware at all, which keeps the attention on the cardigan’s cables.

Ultimate Opaque Matte Tights (Black)

Ultimate Opaque Matte Tights (Black)

View at Commando

$46.00 | Truly opaque and matte, so the leg reads as a continuation of the black skirt rather than a separate layer.

Buttoned all the way up and worn as a top, a cropped cardigan solves the proportion problem a long column skirt can create.

Favorite Daughter’s oatmeal cable knit stops at the natural waist, right where Quince’s black ponte maxi begins, and plain black loafers keep it ready for the office.

A cardigan buttoned as a top looks more deliberate than any pullover.

Styling tip: Matte black opaque tights go on with the loafers, so the gap between hem and shoe disappears completely. The ponte has a small back slit, which means I can take the station stairs at a normal pace without hitching anything up.

4. How to Style a Long Skirt With Knee-High Boots

$289.00 | Black leather on a low heel with zero hardware, sensible enough for a full day between meetings.

The Luxe Rib Turtleneck (Black)

The Luxe Rib Turtleneck (Black)

View at Everlane

$48.00 | Close, fine-rib and only $48, it tucks flat under a full skirt without adding bulk.

Knee boots under a maxi are the warmest trick in this whole list, and hardly anyone even sees them.

The pleats swing open as you walk and flash smooth black leather, which looks crisp with caramel brown under a slim black rib turtleneck.

Black boots under a caramel skirt is a pairing I’d wear to any client meeting.

Styling tip: Leather up to the knee covers the coldest part of the leg, so all I add is a pair of black tights for the stretch above it. I tuck the turtleneck in flat so the waist stays defined under all that pleat volume.

5. How to Style a Long Skirt With Ankle Boots and Lined Tights

HEATTECH Extra Warm Pile Lined Tights (Black)

HEATTECH Extra Warm Pile Lined Tights (Black)

View at Uniqlo

$19.90 | Pile-lined HEATTECH tights for $19.90, and honestly the best-value winter buy in this whole article.

Ankle boots under a maxi leave a gap, and pile-lined tights are the honest answer to it.

The black ponte skirt, Uniqlo’s lined tights and chocolate suede boots stack into an easy weekend uniform, with NAADAM’s light grey cashmere crew softening all that black.

Brown suede under a black skirt is far more interesting than black on black.

Styling tip: On a frosty morning I choose the tights before anything else. The pile lining is noticeably warmer than plain opaques, and once the boots go on, no skin shows anywhere between the hem and the ankle.

6. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Long Wool Coat

View at Vince Camuto

$269.00 | Black silky leather to the knee on a heel, hidden under the silk until you sit down.

Match the coat’s length to the skirt’s and a silk maxi becomes wearable to a winter concert.

Quince’s heather charcoal wool-cashmere coat falls below the knee, so only a few inches of oxblood silk show at the hem before black knee boots take over.

I’ve written a whole guide to styling a wool coat so it keeps looking new, and this is still my favorite way to wear one.

Two long columns, one over the other, is the most elegant silhouette winter allows.

Styling tip: I button the coat all the way and keep both arms in the sleeves, because the coat is the warmth here, not the silk. Heeled knee boots go on underneath over tights, so nothing between knee and ankle ever meets the air.

7. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Quilted Jacket

$270.00 | Classic diamond quilting in olive, cropped so it never fights a long skirt for length.

Lyndon Waterproof Chelsea Booties (Tobacco Suede Waterproof)

$208.00 | Waterproof tobacco suede with elastic gores and a low rubber sole, made for frosty grass.

Country weekends call for a short jacket over a long skirt, never a long one.

Barbour’s cropped olive Liddesdale stops high on the body, so the caramel pleats get the full stage, and tobacco suede Chelsea boots handle the wet lane.

Olive and caramel is the country pairing I come back to every single winter.

Styling tip: Under the quilting I wear a cream knit, and wool tights go under the skirt. The Chelsea boots are waterproof suede, which matters more than the jacket once the grass is soaked with frost.

8. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Faux Shearling Jacket

$170 | Seam-sealed waterproof suede with a removable felt liner, in the Black/Sailcloth colorway.

On a real snow day, I want the warmest jacket I own over the plainest skirt I own.

BLANKNYC’s cropped cognac faux shearling does the heavy lifting above the black ponte maxi, and L.L.Bean’s waterproof snow boots mean no tiptoeing around slush.

If you’re still hunting for a pair, my roundup of winter boots with timeless style is a good place to start.

Cognac against black looks warmer than any all-black snow outfit.

Styling tip: This is the warmest look in the list. I wear fleece-lined tights under the ponte, zip the jacket right up, and let the felt-lined boots deal with whatever is on the ground.

9. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Navy Blazer

Nya Penny Loafers (Tan Burnished Leather)

Nya Penny Loafers (Tan Burnished Leather)

$190.00 | Smooth tan leather in a cognac shade, plain with no hardware or embossing.

Navy is my favorite blazer color with caramel, because it keeps the outfit polished without going brown on brown.

Banana Republic’s hip-length Italian wool blazer sits just over the top of the pleats, and cognac penny loafers repeat the skirt’s warm tone at the floor.

A blazer over a long skirt is more interesting at the office than any trouser suit.

Styling tip: A fine cream turtleneck I already own goes under the blazer, and it traps far more heat than a shirt would. Opaque tights go with the loafers, and a long coat goes over the top for the commute.

10. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Striped Shirt and Cashmere Vest

Fluffy Cashmere Vest (Dark Gray)

Fluffy Cashmere Vest (Dark Gray)

$89.90 | Brushed cashmere with a high neck, adding a warm core layer without sleeves bunching under the shirt.

Collar and cuffs peeking out of a vest is the easiest way to make a black skirt look like brunch rather than the office.

Uniqlo’s oversized striped shirt goes on first, its dark grey high-neck cashmere vest on top, and the whole thing tucks loosely into the black ponte maxi.

Pale blue stripes are the only print a black winter outfit really needs.

Styling tip: Two layers on my core keep me warm without a heavy sweater, and I roll the shirt cuffs once over the vest edge. Black tights and loafers finish it below, so the leg stays covered.

11. How to Style a Long Skirt With a Fitted Bodysuit

$170.00 | Sharp pointed toe and a slim mid heel in black leather, with no hardware to distract.

For a holiday party, a bodysuit under bias-cut silk gives you the cleanest line possible, with nothing bunching at the waist.

Commando’s black long-sleeve Butter bodysuit sits smooth under the oxblood maxi, and pointed Dolce Vita ankle boots sharpen the hem, so gold earrings are all it needs.

Black and oxblood is a more grown-up party combination than any sequin.

Styling tip: Long sleeves and closed boots handle the room once the party warms up, and I wear sheer black tights under the silk. My coat carries the warmth outside, so I never overdress for the walk in.

Christmas lunch is exactly where a silk maxi should meet a slouchy cardigan.

NAADAM’s fine black cashmere crew tucks into the oxblood skirt, and Quince’s speckled oatmeal cable cardigan hangs open over it for a long afternoon at the table.

For more ideas for the day itself, I’ve gathered elegant Christmas lunch outfits in one place.

Silk with cable knit looks more relaxed than any Christmas sweater.

Styling tip: The chunky cables go over a fine cashmere layer, so I can shrug the cardigan off once the oven warms the room. Opaque black tights and loafers under the silk keep my legs warm in a chilly dining room.

Socks between hem and loafer are the smartest travel-day detail I know.

The black ponte maxi, a camel cashmere crew and polished G.H. Bass Weejuns survive a long train ride, while NAADAM’s granite ribbed socks flash a little grey as you walk.

Comfort on a travel day should still look like a choice.

Styling tip: Cashmere socks replace tights on a long journey because they’re softer and easy to adjust. If your hem lands at the lower calf instead of the ankle, I’d add sheer tights underneath so there’s no bare stretch of leg.

$104.30 | Brown suede with a pointed toe and no hardware, now $104.30.

Fair Isle belongs with a long skirt more than with jeans, because the length keeps the pattern from looking like a ski lodge.

L.L.Bean’s ragg wool crew has a cream ground patterned in brown, beige and teal, which picks up the caramel pleats once it’s front-tucked.

A patterned sweater looks most grown-up when everything else stays plain.

Styling tip: Ragg wool is dense and warm, so I skip a coat altogether for a quick coffee run. Wool tights go under the skirt with brown suede booties, and my leg stays covered right down to the ankle.

New Year’s Eve is the one night I’ll put plush volume over a narrow silk column.

Quince’s coffee brown faux fur coat goes on closed over a black NAADAM cashmere turtleneck, with the oxblood silk falling below it to Nine West’s black knee boots.

Chocolate fur over oxblood silk is my favorite way to end the year.

Styling tip: The coat is the warmth here, so I keep it buttoned with both arms in the sleeves for the walk to dinner. Underneath, the turtleneck and tights do the rest, and the knee boots let the silk swing without letting cold in.

Why a Long Skirt Can Be Warmer Than Trousers, and Where the Heat Escapes

A maxi skirt works like a small tent around your legs. The fabric holds a layer of still air that your body warms, and trapped air is what actually insulates.

Trousers sit closer to the skin, so they warm up faster, but they hold far less air between you and the cold.

The weak point is the hem. Every stride pumps a little warm air out of the bottom and pulls cold air in, which is why a skirt that feels cozy indoors can feel drafty on a windy corner.

Closing the bottom is the fix: boots tall enough to disappear under the hem, heavier tights, or socks that meet the skirt with no gap.

Seal the hem and a long skirt goes from a fair-weather choice to one of the warmest things you can wear.

Start with one skirt, not three. The black ponte earns its keep fastest if you work in an office, and the oxblood silk is the better first buy if your winter is mostly dinners and holidays.

Then spend on the warmest thing that goes under it, whether that’s lined tights or a pair of knee boots.

Once the hem is sorted, a long skirt becomes the easiest thing in my winter wardrobe to get dressed in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you wear under a long skirt in winter to stay warm?

Opaque or pile-lined tights are the starting point, and knee-high boots under the hem add leather over the coldest part of the leg. On travel days, cashmere socks are a comfortable swap if your hem reaches the ankle.

Can you wear a silk maxi skirt in winter?

Yes, as long as you treat the silk as the dressy layer rather than the warm one. Pair it with cashmere on top, opaque tights and closed boots underneath, and a long coat whenever you’re outside.

What shoes go with a long skirt in winter?

Knee boots are the warmest choice because the shaft hides under the hem. Ankle boots work over lined tights, and loafers suit the office or a travel day with socks that close the gap.

Will a maxi skirt make me look shorter?

Not if your top is cropped, tucked or fitted so the waist stays visible. Keeping tights and boots close in color to the skirt also keeps the line long from waist to floor.

How do I keep a maxi skirt out of winter slush?

Choose a hem that stops just above the ankle and pair it with a boot that has a bit of heel or a thick sole. The ponte and pleated twill skirts here both land around the ankle on most heights, which keeps them clear of the worst of it.
