Christmas Day asks more of one outfit than any other day of the year. It has to survive wrapping paper at 8 a.m., a hot kitchen at noon, and a frosty walk once the plates are cleared.
So I built these 17 Christmas Day outfits for women over 60 around one idea: soft fabrics, easy waists, and a single festive note per look.
If you’ve been hunting for elegant Christmas outfits for women over 60 that don’t feel stiff, this is the list. Think cashmere, velvet, brushed wool and a little Christmas red, with not a novelty sweater in sight.
I’d rather be the best-dressed person on the sofa than the most uncomfortable one at the table.
1. Oatmeal Cashmere Duster + Charcoal Turtleneck + Grey Wide-Leg Trousers

Shop the Look
Mongolian Cashmere Duster Cardigan Sweater (Oatmeal)
$115.00 | Pure Grade-A cashmere in a long shawl-collar cut, at a price that still surprises me.
Cashmere Sweater | Turtleneck (08 Dark Gray)
$99.90 | Thin enough to sit flat under the duster, and the dark gray reads as true charcoal.
Ponte Wide-Leg Trouser (Heathered Soot)
$148.00 | That pintuck crease is the trick that makes a soft knit trouser look properly pressed.
Lodi Suede Shearling Loafer (Chocolate Suede/Shearling)
$308 | Shearling on the inside, plain chocolate suede outside, and not a single bit of hardware.
A long cashmere duster over a slim charcoal turtleneck creates one unbroken vertical line, which is why this reads polished even on the sofa.
The ponte wide-leg looks tailored but moves like a knit, so sitting cross-legged by the tree never pulls at the waist.
Styling tip: Shearling-lined loafers keep your feet warm on cold floors without the shapelessness of slippers.
2. Crimson Merino Cardigan + Ivory Silk Blouse + Straight Jeans + Suede Loafers

Shop the Look
Marianne Merino Wool Cardigan (Crimson Red)
$190 | Four pockets and a crew neck in a deep crimson that photographs rich, not bright.
Washable Stretch Silk Notch Collar Blouse (Ivory)
$79.90 | Washable silk is a gift on a day when a gravy splash is a real possibility.
90’s Pinch Waist High Rise Straight Jeans (Range)
$208 | A gentle pinch at the waist and a deep blue wash keep the denim looking dressed.
Mazle Leather Loafer (Dark Brown Suede)
$97.50 | Under $100, with a slim moc toe that never looks clunky.
Crimson merino is the gentlest way into Christmas red, because the knit softens the color instead of shouting it.
An ivory silk collar at the neckline lifts the whole look from weekend errand to ready for company. If you love this shape, I keep a list of cardigans that look expensive rather than frumpy.
Styling tip: Leave the bottom two buttons open so the cardigan falls straight instead of tugging across the hips.
3. Forest Green Half-Zip + Warm Brown Corduroy Wide-Legs + Penny Loafers

Shop the Look
Zelda Half-Zip Ribbed Sweater (Forest Glade)
$140 | Forest Glade is a deep hunter green, with a high neck that keeps out the morning chill.
Organic Stretch Corduroy Wide Leg Pants (Warm Brown)
$62 | Soft camel-brown cord with a little stretch; at $62, it’s the easiest yes on this list.
Women’s Whitney Weejuns Penny Loafer (Dark Choco)
$195 | The original Weejun in smooth leather, no hardware, exactly as it should be.
Green and warm brown is the most natural Christmas pairing there is, the colors of a fir branch against bark.
The fine rib keeps the half-zip close to the body, which balances the volume of a high-rise wide corduroy leg.
Styling tip: Zip it to the collarbone, not the chin, and add a small gold stud so the neckline looks finished.
4. Navy Quilted Jacket + Grey Cashmere Crew + Dark Jeans + Duck Boots

Shop the Look
Barbour Navy Annandale Quilted Jacket
$220 | A Barbour Annandale, with the cord collar that makes quilting look heritage instead of sporty.
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Cement)
$98 | Cement is a soft heathered grey, and at $98 this is 100% cashmere.
The Way-High Jean 2.0 (Dark Indigo, 29.5″ Inseam)
$88 | High rise, full straight leg, and a deep indigo that hasn’t been faded to death.
L.L.Bean Women’s Bean Boot 8″ (Tan/Bean Boot Brown/Gum)
$150 | Waterproof, rubber-soled and genuinely built for frosty ground, not a fashion hiker in disguise.
This is the after-lunch walk outfit, and every layer has a job: quilting for warmth, cashmere for softness, waterproof boots for wet pavements.
Navy, grey and indigo stay in one cool family, so the tan boots become the single warm accent.
Styling tip: Cuff the jeans once so the hem sits just above the boot and never drags through wet leaves.
5. Camel Wool-Mohair Coat + Chocolate Turtleneck + Black Ponte Trousers + Pull-On Boots

Shop the Look
John Oversized Coat (Camel)
$790 | Worth the splurge: an oversized camel coat with a soft brushed hand you’ll wear for a decade.
Cashmere Sweater | Turtleneck (39 Dark Brown)
$99.90 | Chocolate-toned, real cashmere, and slim enough to vanish under a big coat.
Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants (Black)
$39.90 | Ultra-stretch with an easy waist, which matters more than anything on a long car ride.
The City Boot (Black)
$278 | Smooth black leather with a low stacked heel and a back pull tab, nothing fussy.
Camel over chocolate is a tonal pairing that looks deliberate, and the black base keeps it sharp for the drive to family.
The coat’s brushed wool-mohair has a plush, slightly fuzzy surface, so it reads cozy without the bulk of a true teddy pile.
Styling tip: Slim ponte and a sleek ankle boot keep everything under an oversized coat narrow, so the coat stays the statement.
6. Wine Cashmere Crew + Grey Flannel Pull-On Trousers + Bordeaux Velvet Slippers

Shop the Look
The Boxy Crew in Cashmere (Heather Wine)
$178 | Heather Wine has a soft merlot depth, and the boxy shape skims rather than clings.
Hudson Pant in Wool Flannel (Heather Grey)
$195 | Wool flannel with a drawstring waist: as easy as loungewear, as smart as tailoring.
Soft Venetian Slipper (Bordeaux Velvet)
$180 | Italian-made velvet Venetians you can greet guests in without a hint of apology.
Hosting means hours on your feet, so this look puts comfort first and hides it well: a cashmere crew, a pull-on flannel waist and velvet slippers.
The wine sweater and bordeaux slippers are close cousins, and that tonal echo from top to toe is what makes it look planned.
Styling tip: The crew is slightly cropped and boxy, so wear the trousers at your natural waist and let the hem just meet the waistband.
7. Christmas Red Flared Trousers + Black Cashmere Crew + Velvet Ballet Flats

Shop the Look
Belgravia Ponte Pants (Royal Red)
$140 | A true Christmas red in crease-resistant ponte, offered in Petite, Regular and Long.
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Black)
$98 | Same cashmere crew as look 4, in black, which tells you how much I rate it.
Almond-Toe Ballet Velvet Flats (Liora) – Black
$138 | Velvet almond-toe flats with a tiny self-tie bow and an elastic strap that keeps them on.
Red trousers are braver than a red top, and that’s exactly why they work: the festive color sits low while black cashmere frames your face in something calm.
Ponte holds a smooth line through a long dinner, and the subtle flare balances the hips.
Styling tip: Choose flats in black velvet, not red, so the trousers stay the only bright note.
8. Grey Cashmere Sweater Dress + Red Cashmere Scarf + Suede Knee Boots

Shop the Look
Mongolian Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater Dress (Heather Grey)
$119.90 | Knee-length cashmere in an easy straight shape that skims, with rib trims at the cuffs and hem.
Cashmere Woven Scarf (Red)
View at People’s Republic of Cashmere
$261 | Bright, fringed and all cashmere, this scarf does the outfit’s festive work alone.
Kaisley Leather Knee High Boot (Dark Brown Suede)
$289 | Plain dark brown suede on a low kitten heel, comfortable for a full afternoon visit.
A grey turtleneck dress is a blank canvas, and one long red scarf turns it into a Christmas outfit in a single move.
Knee boots meet the knee-length hem, so no leg is left bare on the cold walk from the car.
Styling tip: Loop the scarf once and let both ends hang long in front; it lengthens the body and keeps the red near your face.
9. Ivory Fisherman Sweater + Emerald Velvet Trousers + Shearling Moccasins

Shop the Look
Cashmere Fisherman Sweater (Ivory)
$395 | My splurge pick: a chunky fisherman rib in pure cashmere, sized XS through 3X.
Canonbury Velvet Pants (Midnight Emerald)
$199 | Midnight Emerald velvet in a tailored straight leg that glows pine green by the tree.
L.L.Bean Women’s Wicked Good Moccasins (Natural)
$99.95 | Sheepskin-lined with an outdoor-ready sole, so a dash to the mailbox is no problem.
Ivory and deep emerald is a quieter way to wear Christmas colors, and it’s especially lovely with silver hair.
A chunky rib on top and smooth velvet below give the look two textures, which is what makes a simple outfit look rich.
Styling tip: Leave the sweater untucked and push the sleeves up slightly; the straight velvet leg handles the balance.
10. Navy Silk Pajama Set + Embroidered Velvet Slipper-Loafers

Shop the Look
Women’s Silk Pajama Set in Navy
$295 | Silk from collar to cuff, with crisp white piping that looks pressed even when it isn’t.
The Starfinch 15 Embroidery – Ocean Velvet
$175 | Navy velvet with tonal leaf embroidery and a cushioned sole, practically a loafer in disguise.
A matching silk set is the most elegant way to stay in pajamas until lunch, and the white piping makes it look intentional.
Navy is kinder than black in morning light and still looks crisp in photos. For slow mornings, I’ve gathered more cozy but put-together Christmas morning looks too.
Styling tip: Slip a cashmere cardigan over the shirt if guests arrive early; the set instantly reads as loungewear, not bedwear.
11. Camel Knit Poncho + Black Turtleneck + Black Slim Trousers + Ankle Boots

Shop the Look
Merino Wool-Cashmere Funnel-Neck Poncho (Biscotti)
$398 | Merino and cashmere in a blanket-soft funnel neck, the warm camel of a good biscotti.
Cashmere Sweater | Turtleneck (09 Black)
$99.90 | Exactly what belongs under a voluminous layer: slim, fine-gauge, pure cashmere.
Slim Trouser in Ponte (Black)
$128 | Ankle-skimming ponte with pintucks that look tailored and feel like a legging.
Alfie Block Heel Leather Ankle Bootie (Black Leather)
$199 | Pointed toe, low block heel, side zip, and nothing extra.
A poncho over head-to-toe black is the easiest way to look put together for a quick drop-in next door.
The all-black base gives the swingy camel layer a clean frame, so all that volume looks deliberate rather than draped on.
Styling tip: Keep everything under a poncho slim, and choose a pointed-toe boot to sharpen the line at the ankle.
12. Chocolate Faux-Suede Chore Jacket + Winter White Turtleneck + Taupe Wide-Leg Trousers

Shop the Look
Decker Faux Suede Chore Coat (Dark Chocolate)
$158 | Faux suede that’s lighter and easier to care for than the real thing, with patch pockets for the dice.
Winter White Arlo Ribbed Turtleneck
$128 | A fitted rib in a soft winter white that reads ecru, never stark.
Brickell Trousers (Taupe)
$267 | Pressed crease, relaxed wide leg, and a true taupe that bridges the brown and the white.
Nya Penny Loafers (Bitter Chocolate Suede)
$190 | Bitter Chocolate suede that matches the jacket almost exactly.
Chocolate, winter white and taupe sit side by side in the same warm family, so the outfit looks layered and calm at once.
The chore jacket is soft and unstructured, which means you can sit through three rounds of board games without feeling buttoned in.
Styling tip: Wear the jacket open so the white turtleneck runs a bright stripe down the center; it lifts your face.
13. Peacock Blue Cashmere Crew + White Poplin Shirt + Black Straight Jeans

Shop the Look
The Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Peacock Blue)
$98 | Peacock Blue is a deep petrol shade that flatters both cool and warm skin.
The Classic: Fine Poplin, White
View at With Nothing Underneath
$175 | Crisp poplin with a proper collar that stands up under a knit instead of collapsing.
Le Sleek Straight Jeans (Black)
$258 | Black stretch denim in a relaxed straight leg, smart enough to stand in for trousers.
Manner Casual Leather Loafers (Black Leather)
$99 | An almond toe and a slim sole make this plain black loafer look far pricier than $99.
A collared shirt under a crewneck is a classic for a reason: the white collar sits near your jawline and brightens the skin.
Deep peacock blue is unexpected at Christmas, and that freshness is exactly why it stands out at a family lunch.
Styling tip: Let only the collar and a sliver of cuff show, and tuck the shirttails in so they never bunch below the sweater.
14. Blush Silk-Cashmere Twinset + Charcoal Cashmere Midi Skirt + Low Suede Booties

Shop the Look
Blush Cashmere Silk Spencer Cardigan
$198 | Fine-gauge silk-cashmere in a soft rose pink, a shade lighter than dusty rose.
Blush Cashmere Silk Sleeveless Ava Shell
$148 | Its matching shell is what turns a cardigan into a true twinset.
Charcoal Cashmere Maeve Midi Skirt
$248 | Cashmere-wool knit that eases into a subtle A-line, warm without any bulk.
Maribu Ankle Leather Booties (Black Suede)
$104.30 | Genuinely low stacked heels mean tea can turn into a walk with no regrets.
A matching cardigan and shell is the most ladylike look on this list, and charcoal underneath keeps the blush from tipping sweet.
The knit midi eases out from a fitted waist, so it moves when you walk and stays soft when you sit for tea. If your feet need the extra care, here are more comfortable shoes that still look elegant.
Styling tip: Add opaque black tights so skirt, tights and boots join into one long dark line.
15. Black Velvet Blazer + Red Breton Stripe + Dark Jeans + Italian Loafers

Shop the Look
Italian Velvet Blazer (Black)
$349 | Slim, single-breasted and peak-lapelled in Italian velvet, an investment you’ll pull out every December.
MINQUIDAME Breton Shirt (White / Red)
$139 | Saint James made the Breton famous, and this heavy cotton version will outlast every trend.
Luna Stretch Slim Straight Jeans (Deep Rinse)
$50.00 | Clean dark rinse, zero distressing, and only $50.
Made in Italy Loafer (Black)
$328 | Tumbled Italian leather with moccasin stitching and a low stacked heel.
A velvet blazer over a Breton stripe is my favorite trick for festive without fuss: one dressy piece, one casual piece, both classic.
The red stripe does the Christmas work quietly, and a dark rinse jean keeps it relaxed enough for the floor with the grandchildren.
Styling tip: Push the blazer sleeves up an inch so a sliver of stripe shows at the wrist.
16. Chocolate Cable-Knit Midi Dress + Brown Suede Booties + Gold Hoops

Shop the Look
Hyacinth House Chocolate Cable Knit Fernie Midi Dress
$103 | Warm reddish-brown cables, long bell sleeves and a godet skirt that moves when you do.
Maribu Ankle Leather Booties (Brown Suede)
$104.30 | Same comfortable low-heel bootie as look 14, here in a chocolate suede that melts into the dress.
Tube Medium Hoops (18k Gold Vermeil)
$118 | Medium 16mm tubes in gold vermeil: big enough to notice, small enough for every day.
A cable-knit dress with a mock neck and bell sleeves is the knitwear version of a party dress, made for an evening by the fire.
The bodice is fitted, then the skirt eases into a fuller midi, so it flatters without clinging anywhere.
Styling tip: Match the boots to the dress in brown suede, then let small gold hoops be the only shine.
17. Plum Velvet Flares + Heather Grey Cashmere Crew + Embroidered Velvet Mules

Shop the Look
Flare Velvet Pants (Dark Cherry)
$199 | Dark Cherry photographs as a deep plum-wine, with a tailored waist and a full-length flare.
Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Heather Grey)
$50.00 | Real Grade-A cashmere for $50, in a soft grey that lets the velvet lead.
The Goldfinch 15 Mule – Black Gold Starburst Velvet
$185 | Gold starbursts on black velvet over a cushioned sole: festive, backless and easy to slip on.
Velvet trousers with a plain grey sweater is how I like to end Christmas Day: dressed for dessert, comfortable enough for the last cup of coffee.
Grey softens the deep plum-wine velvet, and the gentle flare lets the trousers fall cleanly over the mules.
Styling tip: Pick slippers with a little gold embroidery so the candlelight has something to catch.

See the CalendarChristmas Day Is Three Climates in One, So Dress for the Warmest Room
Christmas Day runs through three climates: a chilly house at dawn, a kitchen running hot by noon, and frosty air on the walk after lunch.
One heavy sweater can’t handle all three, which is why so many of us end up flushed at the table and shivering at the door.
The fix is a removable top layer over a lighter base. A cardigan, poncho, blazer or chore jacket goes over a fine-gauge knit or silk.
Choose a base you’d be happy to be photographed in on its own, because that’s what you’ll be wearing when dinner comes out of the oven.
Dress for the warmest room you’ll sit in, then add a layer for the coldest one.
If you only add one piece this year, make it a soft cashmere layer in a color you’d happily wear with both jeans and velvet.
Everything here carries straight into January, and you’ll find more ideas in my guide to warm, elegant winter outfits.
Christmas is long, and your outfit should be the last thing on your mind once the day begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a woman over 60 wear on Christmas Day at home?
A soft knit with an easy-waisted trouser and a proper shoe or slipper is the sweet spot. Cashmere knits, ponte or flannel trousers and velvet slippers look dressed for photos but stay comfortable all day.
How can I wear Christmas red without looking costume-y?
Put it on one piece only and keep everything else neutral. Red trousers with black cashmere, or a red scarf over grey, read festive and grown-up.
Are velvet trousers too dressy for a casual Christmas Day?
Not when you pair them with a plain sweater instead of silk or sequins. The knit dresses them down, so they feel right for lunch at home and still special by evening.
What shoes are comfortable but still elegant for Christmas Day?
Suede loafers, velvet flats and low block-heel ankle boots all work. Look for a cushioned sole and a heel under two inches so you can stand, cook and walk in them.
Is it fine to stay in pajamas on Christmas morning?
Absolutely, as long as they’re a matching set in silk or another substantial fabric. Add a cardigan and real slippers and you’re ready for the doorbell.
