Ever wondered how the ultra-rich (not just rich 🙂 ) effortlessly exude that air of timeless elegance? Well, you’re in for a treat! Today, we’re diving into the world of old money style – a fashion philosophy that’s as relevant in 2024 as it was decades ago.

Did you know that a McKinsey & Company survey found that 65% of consumers plan to purchase more durable fashion items, with a growing emphasis on classic styles over fleeting trends?

We have to say though that even the luxury brands today are not the same as they were decades ago…materials changed, quality changed, and the way of work has changed.

Still, the old money aesthetic and quiet luxury style is having a major moment for on people like us, who prefer quality over quantity! Actually, that is the reason why i started this blog: through writing and exploring the old money pieces to work on creating Fall Capsule Wardrobe and Old Money lifestyle for me!

We’re in this together! Trust me, your future self will thank you!

1. The Classic Blazer: Your Wardrobe’s Must

Let me tell you, after years of curating my own old money style capsule wardrobe, I’ve learned that a well-tailored blazer is an absolute game-changer. It’s like that reliable friend who’s always there to make you look put-together, and will elevate even the more basic outfits.

I remember the first time I invested in a quality blazer. I was nervous about the price tag, but was it worthy! The key is finding that perfect balance of timeless style and versatility. You want a piece that’ll look just as fabulous with jeans and a tee as it does with tailored trousers for a big meeting.

When shopping for a blazer, pay attention to the fabric. A wool blend or high-quality linen is the best option. Look for a cut that flatters your body shape too. For me, a slightly nipped-in waist does wonders.
I was never into oversized items. Still, i tried oversized blazer to see what’s the hype for. And that was the confirmation that oversized clothes are a big No for me.

Now, let’s talk buttons. Single-breasted styles with one or two buttons tend to be the most versatile. I love also a double-breasted blazer, though it’s a love from distance. I do not own one as it’s more difficult to use it for everyday outfits.

Though recently i saw this Sezane blazer which is not classic and more suitable for everyday use.

When it comes to styling a blazer, the possibilities are endless. Throw it over a silk cami and dark jeans for date night, or pair it with wide-leg trousers and loafers for a chic office look. I’ve even worn mine over a simple summer dress to elevate a casual brunch outfit.

One tip I wish I’d known earlier: don’t be afraid to play with colors! While a classic black or navy blazer is undoubtedly useful, a rich brown or soft beige can be surprisingly versatile. I recently added a taupe blazer to my old money style collection, and it’s quickly become my go-to for both work and weekend outings.

Remember, the perfect blazer should make you feel confident and powerful. It’s not just about looking good (though that’s a nice bonus) – it’s about feeling like your best self and feel comfortable. Sometimes it might feel as too much and we do not want that for our casual outfits.

So take your time, try on different styles, and find the one that makes you stand a little taller.

2. The Crisp White Button-Down: A Sartorial Blank Canvas

The white button-down shirt is a garment that speaks volumes in its simplicity.

When looking for the perfect white button-down shirt, focus on the fabric. A good cotton poplin feels nice and keeps its crisp look. A little bit of stretch can make it more comfortable while still looking sharp. For the best fit, make sure the shirt fits your body well without being too tight or too loose.

Old Money Aesthetics, 90s style of Woman Rolling Up Sleeves of White Blouse

The versatility of a white button-down is truly remarkable. For a sophisticated office ensemble, I often pair mine with a tailored wool trouser and a cashmere cardigan by my favorite Falconeri. For more relaxed affairs, I’ll layer it under a fine-gauge sweater, leaving the collar and cuffs peeking out elegantly. In the warmer months, I find it delightful tucked into a wide leg pants.

One of my favorite old money styling techniques involves pairing the white shirt with a beautifully cut blazer, sleeves of the shirt carefully folded to reveal just a hint of wrist. It’s a subtle detail that speaks volumes about one’s attention to refinement. For evening soirées, consider leaving the top buttons undone and adorning your décolletage with a statement pearl necklace – timeless sophistication at its finest.

Apart of the classical white shirt, i adore the white ruffled blouses as well. They give that extra delicate old money style look, often adding a touch of elegance and charm to a classic design. This type of blouse pairs effortlessly with tailored trousers or a pencil skirt for a polished yet soft look.

In essence, the white button-down is more than a mere garment – it’s a canvas upon which to paint your personal style story. It’s a piece that gracefully adapts to life’s myriad occasions while maintaining an air of timeless elegance. Embrace it, style it with intention, and watch as it becomes the cornerstone of your old money style-inspired wardrobe.

3. The Little Black Dress: Channeling Timeless Sophistication

Throughout fashion history, few garments have reached the iconic status of the Little Black Dress. This timeless piece has adorned the wardrobes of style-conscious women for nearly a century, perfectly capturing the essence of old money style.

I recall my first encounter with a truly exquisite LBD – a moment of pure sartorial enlightenment. The simplicity of its line, Lady Like Style, the richness of its fabric, and the versatility it promised were nothing short of revelatory. I call it a Monica Belucci-style dress. It was then I understood why this piece has been a cornerstone of refined dressing since Coco Chanel introduced it in the 1920s.

When selecting your own Little Black Dress, consider it an investment in timeless old money style. Opt for a silhouette that flatters your form without being overly restrictive. A knee-length sheath dress offers versatility for various occasions, while a midi-length A-line cut provides a touch of vintage sophistication. The key lies in choosing a style that makes you feel effortlessly elegant that you can use on various occasions.

I’m in love with this dress. With long sleeves and a sweetheart neckline, this piece is both elegant and versatile, transitioning effortlessly from day to evening.

Fabric selection is paramount. A high-quality wool crepe or silk blend offers structure and drape that elevates the entire look. I’ve found that a dress with subtle texture – perhaps a delicate jacquard or a fine ribbed knit – adds depth and interest without compromising the LBD’s inherent simplicity.

One of my favorite styling techniques involves layering. A gossamer-thin turtleneck beneath the dress adds intrigue and warmth for cooler months, while a beautifully cut trench coat draped over the shoulders creates an air of mystery and allure.

Remember, the Little Black Dress is more than just a garment – it’s a canvas for self-expression, a reliable companion for life’s myriad occasions. It whispers of sophistication and confidence, embodying the timeless elegance that old money style celebrates.

As you curate your wardrobe, I urge you to choose your Little Black Dress as part of your minimalist wardrobe essentials with care and intention. Let it be a reflection of your personal old money style, a piece that makes you feel poised and powerful. In doing so, you’re not just wearing a dress – you’re carrying forward a legacy of elegance that spans generations.

4. The Cashmere Sweater: Luxurious Comfort Meets Elegance

Next on the list probably are my favorites: cashmere sweaters. The crème de la crème of knitwear. There’s something truly special about slipping on a cashmere sweater. It’s like wrapping yourself in a cloud of warmth and sophistication.

And let me tell you, it’s a total game-changer for nailing that old money aesthetic we’re all after.

So, why cashmere? Well, it’s not just soft – it’s ridiculously soft. Plus, it keeps you toasty without making you look like the Michelin Man. Win-win, right? It’s got this subtle shine that just screams “I’ve got my life together” (even if you totally don’t).

Now, let’s talk TLC for your cashmere. Treat it like the precious darling it is. Hand wash it gently – no rough stuff here. And whatever you do, don’t hang it up to dry unless you want a sweater that reaches your knees. Lay it flat and reshape it like you’re smoothing out a cat. Trust me on this one.

This extra care ensures they retain their lovely feel and appearance for years to come. A cedar moth repellent in your closet can also help protect these precious garments.

Color-wise, neutrals are your best friends and will make you look expensive even if you’re shopping on a budget. A creamy sweater paired with tailored trousers? Chef’s kiss. But don’t be afraid to go bold – a deep navy or rich burgundy can be surprisingly versatile.

Styling these beauties is a breeze. In cooler months, I love layering a fine-gauge turtleneck under a blazer for a sophisticated office ensemble for that “I’m a CEO but make it cozy” look. As spring approaches, a V-neck sweater draped over the shoulders of a crisp white shirt adds a touch of casual elegance to any outfit.

Remember, a well-chosen cashmere sweater is more than just clothing—it’s an investment in enduring style and comfort.

It embodies the sophisticated style that we celebrate, offering a timeless elegance that transcends fleeting trends. Choose your cashmere pieces thoughtfully, care for them lovingly, and they’ll remain cherished elements of your wardrobe for years to come.

5. The Tailored Trousers: Leg-endary Style Staples

In the realm of refined dressing, well-fitted trousers are nothing short of essential. These versatile pieces form the foundation of countless elegant ensembles, embodying the timeless sophistication we aim to achieve.

Model sitting on a beige modern chair, wearing light blue high-waisted wide-leg pants and a sheer white blouse. The look is elegant and minimal, with relaxed, sophisticated styling.

I vividly recall the moment I slipped on my first pair of impeccably tailored trousers. The way they skimmed my silhouette, creating a long, lean line, was nothing short of transformative. It was then I truly understood why these garments have been a cornerstone of discerning wardrobes for generations.

When selecting trousers, one must consider both cut and fabric with equal care. A classic straight-leg silhouette offers versatility for myriad occasions, while a wide-leg cut channels a certain vintage sophistication.

For those blessed with height, a high-waisted trouser can create a beautifully elongated silhouette. Most of the time, they will require tailoring, and that is ok. Means will be perfect height for you.

Fabric choice is paramount in achieving that air of quiet luxury. A fine wool flannel drapes beautifully and transitions seamlessly from day to evening. For warmer months, a lightweight wool-silk blend or a crisp linen offers breathability without sacrificing elegance. I’ve found that a touch of stretch in the fabric can provide comfort for long days without compromising the clean lines we so desire.

Styling these trousers is where one’s personal flair truly shines. For a polished daytime look, I often pair mine with a silk blouse and a tailored blazer, perhaps adding a delicate pendant necklace for a touch of luminosity. As evening approaches, the transformation is subtle yet impactful – exchanging the blouse for a fine-gauge cashmere sweater or ruffled blouse and adorning one’s wrist with a vintage bracelet.

One of my favorite styling techniques involves playing with proportions. A voluminous silk blouse tucked into high-waisted trousers creates a captivating silhouette, while a fitted turtleneck paired with wide-leg trousers offers a nod to 1970s sophistication.

It’s worth noting that proper care is essential in maintaining the pristine appearance of your trousers as for all the wardrobe pieces we mentioned till now. Regular pressing and judicious cleaning will ensure they remain a steadfast companion in your wardrobe for years to come.

In essence, well-tailored trousers are more than mere garments – they’re a statement of refined taste and attention to detail.

6. The Leather Loafers: Stepping into Refined Territory

Let’s talk about leather loafers, shall we? These shoes are the secret weapon in any elegant wardrobe. They’re like the Swiss Army knife of footwear – versatile, practical, and always stylish. Perfect for the old money aesthetic.

Now, you’ve got options when it comes to loafers. There’s the penny loafer, with that cute little strap across the top – it’s giving preppy chic, and I’m here for it. Then you’ve got the horsebit loafer, with its fancy metal bit. It’s a bit extra, but in the best way possible. And if you’re feeling minimalist, a plain loafer is always a classic choice.

Whichever you choose, just be sure they’re comfortable.

Here’s a little secret: taking care of your loafers is key to keeping that polished look. Give them a good polish now and then – it’s like a spa day for your shoes. And don’t forget to brush off the dust. Trust me, your loafers will thank you by looking fabulous for years.

Styling these beauties is where the fun really begins. Pair them with tailored trousers and a crisp shirt for that “I mean business” look. Or throw them on with jeans and a blazer for a casual Friday that’s anything but sloppy. Feeling daring? Try them with a flowy dress for brunch – it’s an unexpected combo that totally works.

When you’re shopping for loafers, remember: quality over quantity. A good pair of loafers is like a good friend – they get better with age. Go for classic colors like black, brown, or cognac. They’ll play nice with everything in your closet.

Bottom line? Leather loafers are more than just shoes. They’re a statement. They say, “I’ve got great taste, and I don’t need to shout about it.” So choose your loafers wisely, treat them well, and watch how they elevate your style game. That’s the quiet luxury way, darling.

7. The Leather Belt: Cinching Elegance and Functionality

You know, I used to think belts were just for keeping your pants up. When it comes to using them as accessories they can be avoided as clutter the look. Was I wrong! It wasn’t until I started really diving into the world of old money style that I realized just how crucial a good leather belt can be.

I remember one afternoon i needed to go out with my husband. It was the time i started dressing more consciously. I’ve put lovely baby blu shirt and jeans, but something was missing. Of course it was the belt, though the issue was when trying the belts i had in my wardrobe, they were not looking good. Either the material was off, or how wide they were….or the front design. The whole outfit was better without belt instead of wearing some of those!

That’s when I knew I needed to step up my belt game.

Now, when it comes to choosing a leather belt, there are a few things to keep in mind. First off, forget those flashy designer logos or oversized buckles. We’re going for subtle elegance here, remember? A simple, well-crafted belt with a understated buckle is your best bet. I usually go for a width between 1.25 to 1.5 inches – it’s versatile enough to work with both jeans and dress pants.

Here’s a pro tip: always opt for full-grain leather. Yes, it’s pricier, but trust me, it’s worth every penny. Full-grain leather ages like fine wine, developing a beautiful patina over time that adds character to your look.

Coccinelle Beth belt

The Beth belt is the perfect accessory to elevate any old money style outfit. It stands out with its rounded buckle, adding a unique aesthetic to the piece.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is how a well-chosen leather belt can elevate even the simplest outfit. Pair a classic brown leather belt with some tailored chinos and a crisp white Oxford shirt, and you’ve got yourself a timeless look that whispers rather than shouts sophistication.

And don’t forget about black belts! They’re not just for formal wear. A sleek black leather belt can add a touch of refinement to a casual outfit, perfect for those “smart casual” events that always seem to trip people up.

Remember, the goal isn’t to have people compliment your belt. It should blend seamlessly with your outfit, enhancing without overpowering. It’s all about that quiet confidence that comes with knowing every element of your ensemble has been carefully considered.

I’ve found that investing in a few high-quality leather belts in classic colors like black, dark brown, and cognac covers pretty much all my bases. And let me tell you, there’s something incredibly satisfying about buckling on a belt that you know will look even better in ten years than it does today.

8. The Trench Coat: Weathering Style Storms with Grace

You know, I’ve always had a bit of a love affair with trench coats. There’s just something about them that screams sophistication, even when you’re battling the elements.

Even as a girl when i was shopping with my parents for spring jacket i was always opting for trench coat. And i would still choose the same model actually. What i would change now is the material…and how i take care for it honestly.

I had this lovely black coat, which when i was putting it, it was elevating my whole look. It was the perfect length. Still, after 2 seasons the color faded.

Trench coat it’s all about the fit. A well-fitted trench should skim your body without being too tight. The shoulder seams should sit right at your shoulders, and the hem should hit just above your knees. I tried an oversized trench in an attempt to appear more trendy and look ‘effortless’. Let’s just say I ended up looking more like Inspector Gadget than Audrey Hepburn.

Now, let’s talk fabric. A classic trench is usually made from gabardine, a tightly woven cotton twill that’s both water-resistant and breathable. But don’t be afraid to explore other options like wool or even leather for a more modern twist. Just remember, we’re aiming for old money style here, not flashy fashion statements.

Color-wise, you can’t go wrong with the classic beige or khaki. It’s versatile, timeless, and goes with pretty much everything. That being said, lately i had my eyes on a navy trench that surely will become my go-to for dressier occasions. It adds a touch of sophistication without being too stuffy.

Remember, a trench coat isn’t just a piece of clothing – it’s an investment in your style. It’s one of those rare items that actually looks better with age, developing a unique patina that tells the story of all the adventures you’ve had while wearing it.

So, whether you’re running errands on a rainy day or attending a swanky rooftop soirée, don’t underestimate the power of a good trench coat. It’s the perfect blend of function and fashion, allowing you to weather any style storm with grace and elegance.

9. The Leather Tote: Carrying Elegance Everywhere

Now, here’s the thing about leather totes – they’re not just about looks. A good leather tote is like a trusted sidekick, ready to carry everything from your laptop to your emergency snack stash. I’ve had mine for years now, and it’s been with me through thick and thin.

Board meetings? Check.

Impromptu weekend getaways? You bet.

That time I had to carry two big bottles of wine around? Don’t ask, but my tote had my back.

When it comes to choosing a leather tote, size matters. Trust me, I learned this the hard way when I bought one that was basically big enough to fit a small child. Sure, it could hold everything, but I looked like I was always headed to the airport. Moreover, since i started working from home, honestly i no longer need such big bag.

Now, I stick to a medium-sized tote – big enough for daily essentials but not so large that I’m tempted to pack my entire life in it.

Color-wise, you can’t go wrong with classics like black, brown, or tan. They go with everything and don’t show wear as easily. I’ve got a soft spot for my cognac tote. It adds a pop of color without being too flashy – perfect for when I want to feel a bit more adventurous.

Now, let’s talk organization. Because let’s face it, a tote can quickly become a black hole if you’re not careful. I learned this lesson when each time when i need to open the home door i need to look for 10 min for the keys. One day in July i also called the neighbour to open the building door as it was too hot under the sun, and was not able to find the keys.

Here’s a pro tip: invest in some small pouches or organizers. I use one for my tech stuff (chargers, earbuds, etc.) and one for my personal items (lip balm, hand cream, the works). It’s a game-changer, I tell you.

And even when you need to change the bag. Just take the pouches and switch bag.

Taking care of your leather tote is crucial if you want it to last. Let’s just say leather and water aren’t the best of friends .I always use a leather protector spray at the start of each season. And if it does get wet? Let it air dry naturally – no heat!

So, whether you’re a busy professional, a mom on-the-go, or just someone who likes to be prepared for anything, don’t underestimate the power of a good leather tote. It’s not just a bag – it’s a statement. A statement that says, “I’ve got this,” even when you’re secretly wondering if you have everything in your bag.

Remember, a quality leather tote is an investment in both style and functionality. It’s one of those rare items that actually gets better with age, developing a character all its own. And there’s something incredibly satisfying about reaching into your well-organized tote and finding exactly what you need, right when you need it.

Trust me, once you experience the magic of a truly great leather tote, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one. It’s not just about carrying your stuff – it’s about carrying your elegance with you, wherever you go.

10.  The Heirloom Watch: Timeless in More Ways Than One

Now, I’ll be honest – at first, I didn’t get it. I mean, my phone could tell time just fine, right?

In old money circles, a fine watch is more than an accessory – it’s a statement. It whispers (never shouts) about tradition, taste, and a respect for craftsmanship. I’ve seen entire conversations happen without a word, just a knowing nod between two watch enthusiasts.

Brown leather White Rider Analog Watch at 212 Time

Let’s talk styles. There’s a whole world out there beyond the Rolex Submariner (though don’t get me wrong, it’s a classic for a reason). Personally, I’m partial to the understated elegance of a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. It’s got this neat flip-over case that was originally designed for polo players. Do I play polo? Absolutely not. Do i own one? Absolutely not.

Here’s the thing about watches – it’s not about the brand name, it’s about the story. And i actually i have three watches: one by mom, two by my dearest friends. They’re not expensive on the level of Rolex or Jaeger-LeCoultre. And you know what, i’d not change them for anything.

There is a whole science behind the watches, and suggesting which to buy, how to maintain it etc, though i won’t pretend as i am an expert about watches.

Not everyone can drop a small fortune on a timepiece, and honestly, you don’t have to. There are plenty of fantastic watches out there that won’t require you to remortgage your house.

If you’re looking for something with a bit of Swiss pedigree without breaking the bank, you might want to check out Tissot.

One brand that’s really been impressing me lately is Frederique Constant. They’re relatively new on the scene, but they’re making waves with their ‘accessible luxury’ approach.

Oh, and let’s not forget about Timex! I know, I know, it might not have the cachet of some fancier brands, but hear me out. Their Marlin hand-wound model? It’s a reissue of a classic 1960s design, and it looks absolutely smashing with any outfit.

Here’s a little tip I’ve learned over the years: don’t overlook vintage watches. Sometimes you can snag a real gem for a fraction of the price of a new watch.

Remember, at the end of the day, it’s not about how much you spend on a watch. It’s about how it makes you feel when you wear it. A watch should be an expression of your personal style, not a testament to the size of your bank account.

And if it has some story connected to it, it was gifted from someone precious to you, even better!
