Ten pieces is enough. My 2027 capsule wardrobe is exactly that small, and it still gets me dressed for the office, the weekend and dinner for almost three weeks without a repeat.
The secret is not the pieces. It is the capsule wardrobe color palette they share.
Camel, navy, ivory, grey, white and indigo, finished with black and one pair of dark brown loafers.
Every top here works with every bottom, which is the only rule a 10 piece capsule wardrobe really needs.
I am not forecasting anything for the year ahead. These are simply the colours I’d want hanging in my closet on the first of January, because they have never once looked dated.
Below are the ten real pieces, then twenty ways I’d wear them.
The Pieces
Two layers, three tops, three bottoms and two pairs of shoes. Nothing here has a logo, a trend detail or a colour that fights the others.
1. J.Crew Chiara Topcoat in Dark Camel

Chiara Topcoat in Double Face (Dark Camel) ($398, J.Crew). Wool-rich double-face cloth with a little cashmere in it, in a true mid camel with no rust cast. It falls below the knee, so it covers the blazer completely and still looks deliberate over the skirt.
2. Quince Italian Wool Long Blazer in Navy

Italian Wool Long Blazer (Navy) ($130, Quince). I wanted real wool and a clear navy that never reads as black, and this one-button cut gives me both. The low-hip length is long enough to wear over a knit and tidy enough to go under the coat.
3. Quince Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck in Ivory

Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater (Ivory) ($50, Quince). Fine 12-gauge cashmere is thin enough to slide under a blazer or sit over a shirt collar. The ivory is a warm off-white with no yellow in it, which is harder to find than it sounds.
4. Everlane Cashmere Slim Crew in Navy

Cashmere Slim Crew Sweater (Navy) ($148, Everlane). Slim through the body with a doubled neckline, this is the knit that makes navy look deliberate rather than safe. It is pure cashmere, and fine enough to layer in both directions.
5. Everlane Everyday Shirt in Silky Cotton, White

Everyday Shirt in Silky Cotton (White) ($88, Everlane). Supima cotton, a proper point collar and a long shirttail hem that stays tucked. The oversized cut is the point: relaxed when it’s open at the neck, sharp when it’s under a knit.
6. DL1961 Halle Straight High-Rise Jeans in Mediterranean

Halle Straight High Rise Instasculpt 29″ Jeans (Mediterranean) ($219, DL1961). High rise, slim-straight, and cut to the ankle with a raw hem, so both pairs of shoes are always on show. The wash is a dark indigo with soft fading at the thigh, which keeps the denim from feeling stiff.
7. J.Crew Arched Trouser in Lightspun Wool Blend, Grey

Arched Trouser in Lightspun Wool Blend (Grey) ($178, J.Crew). Double pleats, an extra-high rise and a full-length wide leg, in a cool mid grey that stops well short of charcoal. Grey is the colour that lets navy and ivory share a wardrobe.
8. J.Crew Gwyneth Column Slip Skirt in Black

Gwyneth Column Slip Skirt in Cupro Blend (Black) ($128, J.Crew). Black, softly matte and cut as a slim column with small side slits, this is the evening piece of the ten. The cupro blend drapes like silk, and the elastic waist disappears under a tucked knit.
9. Quince Italian Leather Heeled Ankle Boot in Black

Italian Leather Heeled Ankle Boot (Black) ($150, Quince). No hardware, no lug sole, no decorative stitching: just black leather, an almond toe and a mid block heel. That heel is what lifts the wide trouser hem and sharpens the skirt.
10. G.H. Bass Sloane Venetian Loafer in Dark Choco

Women’s Sloane Venetian Loafer (Dark Choco) ($150, G.H. Bass). Dark chocolate leather is the one warm note at ground level. The vamp is completely plain, and I think brown flatters navy and grey more than black ever does.
The Outfits
Same ten pieces, twenty outfits. Watch how a single swap, a knit for a shirt or a boot for a loafer, changes the whole mood.
1. Camel Coat, Ivory Knit and Indigo Jeans
Camel beside ivory is the richest-looking pairing in this wardrobe, and it asks nothing of you. The coat falls below the knee, so the jeans show only from the shin down and the black boots finish the line.
The soft fading at the thigh is what keeps this a weekend outfit, and I like it that way.

2. Navy Blazer, White Shirt and Indigo Jeans
Trade the coat for the navy blazer and the same jeans are suddenly ready for the office. I leave the oversized white shirt a little loose at the waist so the blazer’s single button has something to hold in.
Chocolate loafers warm up all that blue. Brown leather with navy beats black every time.

3. Navy Knit and Grey Pleated Trousers
No denim, no layer, and this is still the outfit people ask about. The slim navy crewneck tucks into the extra-high pleated waist, and the wide grey leg does the rest.
Navy and grey is the quietest pairing in the capsule, and the most convincing at a desk.

4. Camel Coat Over the Navy Blazer and Grey Trousers
Yes, a coat over a blazer, and it works because the topcoat is cut relaxed enough to take a jacket underneath. The white collar, the navy lapel and the camel lapel stack into three clean lines at the neck.
Black boots replace the loafers here, and the block heel lifts the wide grey hem clear of a wet pavement. This is the most dressed the capsule gets before noon.

5. Ivory Knit and Black Slip Skirt
Here is where the skirt comes in, and the whole wardrobe softens. Matte ivory cashmere against black with a satin-like drape is a contrast of texture, which matters far more than a contrast of colour.
I tuck the knit loosely at the front and let the boots sit under the midi hem.
Lunch never needs more than this.

6. White Shirt Tucked Into the Black Slip Skirt
Black and white, nothing else, and it is the sharpest thing on this list. The shirttail hem tucks flat into the elastic waist, the cuffs get rolled once, and the collar stays open.
Same skirt and boots as the last outfit, but crisp cotton turns lunch into dinner. I’d take this over a dress.

7. Camel Coat, Navy Knit and Indigo Jeans
Outfit one, in a lower key. Navy cashmere in place of ivory makes the camel coat look deeper, and loafers in place of boots take the whole thing down to errand speed.
A raw denim hem and a flat brown loafer were made for each other.

8. Navy Blazer Over the Ivory Knit With Grey Trousers
Ivory under navy lights up the face in a way a white shirt never quite manages. With no collar in the way, the blazer’s notch lapel sits clean against the crew neck.
Grey pleated trousers and chocolate loafers keep everything soft from the waist down. For a meeting, I trust this more than a suit.

9. White Collar Under the Navy Knit With Indigo Jeans
The white collar is the whole point. Worn under the slim navy knit, the shirt shows at the neck, at the cuffs and a little at the hem, which makes plain jeans look thought through.
Smooth the shirt flat before the knit goes on, because it is cut generously.
It’s the oldest trick in the book and still the best one.

10. Camel Coat, Navy Knit and Black Slip Skirt
Navy with black is the pairing people talk themselves out of, and it is the most elegant one here. The dark knit and the darker skirt read as one long line, with the camel coat the only light thing in the outfit.
Boots, not loafers, because evening wants the heel.
Dark on dark under camel is how this capsule does going out.

11. Navy Blazer, White Shirt and Black Slip Skirt
Think of this as the suit the capsule doesn’t own. The navy blazer squares off the shoulders, the white shirt stays buttoned higher than usual, and the black skirt moves where trousers wouldn’t.
It is the first time the blazer meets the skirt, and the mood shifts from office to occasion. A slip skirt under tailoring always looks more interesting than a matching set.

12. Ivory Knit and Grey Trousers
Pale on pale makes this the lightest look of the twenty. Ivory cashmere and cool mid grey sit close in tone, so the pleats and the wide leg become the detail.
Dark chocolate loafers are the anchor, and without them it would drift.
This is what I’d wear on the first bright morning of the year.

Crisp is the word. The white shirt replaces the knits under the coat, and suddenly the camel looks sharper and the grey trousers look more tailored.
I wear the shirt tucked, the coat open so the pleats show, and the boots for the walk to the train. A coat this good deserves a clean shirt beneath it.

14. Navy Blazer, Navy Knit and Indigo Jeans
Three blues at once: clear navy wool, ink navy cashmere and dark indigo denim. They don’t match, and that is why it works, because each one has a slightly different depth and surface.
Black boots close it off at the ankle. Tonal dressing is the fastest way to look considered over a coffee.

15. Ivory Knit Over the White Shirt With the Black Skirt
Collar out, knit on top, and the black skirt goes to Sunday lunch. White against ivory is a tone-on-tone detail you only notice up close, which is exactly the right amount of effort.
Loafers instead of boots are the swap that matters here, because flat brown leather makes a slip skirt a daytime piece.
I’d wear it straight through to supper.

Warm camel, warm ivory, cool grey. The trousers are the one cool tone, and they stop the outfit tipping into head-to-toe beige.
With the coat on, this is outfit twelve made ready for a long day in the city, loafers included. Nothing in this capsule looks more expensive.

17. Navy Blazer, Ivory Knit and Indigo Jeans
Casual Friday, solved. A blazer over a crew neck is softer than a blazer over a shirt, and ivory against navy is the strongest contrast the capsule offers above the waist.
Boots rather than loafers give the ankle-length jeans a longer line.

Navy, black and chocolate brown are three darks that are supposed to clash and don’t. Without the coat or the heel, the knit and skirt from outfit ten slow right down into something for an unhurried afternoon.
A slim knit over a slim column skirt keeps the proportions narrow, and the loafers keep it easy. Flat shoes with a midi skirt is the more modern choice.

Comfort and polish are not opposites.

20. Navy Blazer Over the Navy Knit With Grey Trousers
A navy knit under a navy blazer reads almost like a suit jacket and its shell, one unbroken block of blue. Grey pleated trousers add the wide, swinging leg that makes it feel like evening.
It uses the same knit and trousers as outfit three, yet the blazer and black boots turn a desk outfit into dinner with friends. Ten pieces, and I’d still happily wear this one twice in a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can 10 pieces really make 20 outfits?
Easily. Three tops, three bottoms, two layers and two pairs of shoes give you far more than twenty combinations on paper, and I only kept the ones I’d actually wear.
What colors make a timeless capsule wardrobe color palette?
Two darks, two lights, one warm neutral and one bridge. Here that is navy and black, ivory and white, camel, and a cool mid grey that sits happily between all of them.
Can I wear navy, black and brown together?
Yes, and I think it looks better than keeping them apart. The key is that each one is clearly its own colour: a navy that reads blue, a true black and a dark chocolate brown.
What if I already own some of these pieces?
Use what you have. Match the colour and the cut, not the label, and only buy the gaps.
How does this capsule work when the weather warms up?
Leave the coat at home and let the blazer become your outer layer. The white shirt with the jeans or the black skirt and the loafers carries you well into spring.
